demon carb on 289???
Hi, I'm new to this site.
My neighbor came over and asked me to help him tune his carb. He has a fresh .040 over 289, aftermarket iron heads with 1.94 intake, high rise dual plane, 284 advertised intake duration hyd. cam, headers, crane ignition, 10.5 to 1 slugs in a '65 coupe. Sitting atop the carb is a 650 vac. sec. street Demon carb and it runs really rich (it smokes black at idle). I told the guy before I start messing with it that I thought the carb is too big for a 289. I have it jetted in the ball park. It pulls 11 " of vac. @ 900 rpm so I left the 6" power valve in it. It has a 4 corner Idle set up. I have each idle screw turned out only a half a turn and I there is still a little smoke at idle though it is alot better than it was. What kind of carb do you run on your small blocks? Would my neighbor be better with a 600? Also, I put his total advance at about 35 degrees and it seems to like that. Does that sound about right? As my name says I'm Mopar all the way through. I'm just trying to help the '65 next door. |
