Insurance Prices

Where is a good place to get insurance? I'm 23 years old and single, and insurance is scary expensive for me. I did an online quote with Geico on a 99 Cobra, and it came to approximately $2300 for 6 months of coverage. I can't afford that. I'd hate to have to wait until I'm 25 to get what I want.

Newbie, shopping for a 99+ GT 5spd (maybe a Cobra), for daily driver. Looking to buy ~Jan '02, for ~$20k. Suggestions are welcomed. I'm currently in a '94 Tbird V8.

Skeeter 08-23-2001 01:32 PM

That's insane. I pay half that on two cars. A 97 cobra, and a 95 s-10 pickup. I'm also < 25 and single. I wouldn't think Witchita would be any more expensive than St. Paul. I have the Cobra listed as my second vehicle, so it's not as expensive. Don't know what it would be as my primary. Not to pry, but how's your driving record?
btw, I use State Farm.

I'm 24 now but have had my cobra (a 96) since I was 20. Granted I was married at the time but still I only paid like $450 every six months. It's down to about $300 now. I use state farm. Progressive quoted me 2 years ago $2100 for six months so I don't think they could help either.

Hi Tim,
Try electricinsurance.com. I just have mine and it saved me almost $400/year over the AIG.com and $700/year over Geico. If it's still too high, take some defensive Driving course for another 10% discount. It is really worth it. Good Luck.

I checked out State Farm online, and the quote was $1500 for 6 months. I have myself listed as primary driver and my dad as the secondary driver. We both have excellent driving records. I put that it's driven to work only, with 15 miles 1 way.

I will also check out American Family and electricinsurance.com. I will go see an agent when I have time.

At 23 your insurance is still going to be pretty high. Especially on a 99 Cobra. Your insurance is figured on the price of the car and the hp of it, mainly, as well as other things. If it was a GT it's one thing, but a Cobra, that's another and the insurance companies know it. Your insurance starts to go down considerably at 25. Geico is a joke, too. Check with American family. Everyone will be high on a new cobra. A GT will be cheaper but will still be on the high side because it's a new sports car and your age. But with full coverage you shouldn't have to be more than $150/month for a new GT as long as your record is clean. I sure wouldn't think over $1000 every 6 months (about $167/mo). My dad's been an American Family Ins. agent for about 30 or so years so I know a bit about that stuff, http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif.

Also, if only your name will be on the title then your insurance will have to be in your name (primary driver). If your dad's name will be on the title with or without your name as well, then your dad can be put on as primary driver and your insurance will be alot cheaper. But your dad's name MUST be on the title (either his alone or both his and yours) in order for the car to be insured in his name. And you drive the car http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif. See works out pretty nifty, eh?

I use state farm and pay 115 a month for a 97' Cobra. I'm 24/married. I got a quote from Geico and it was triple that. Call your local state farm office.

This was the best one yet! Only $6502/yr with Electric Insurance! That's only 541.83/mo! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/rolleyes.gif
I went back and put my dad as the primary driver and it dropped to $2670/yr (222.50/mo). Changed it to a 99 GT (I did a 99 Cobra first) and it was $4948/yr for me and $2040/yr for my dad. Out of curiosity, I went back an looked at a 6-cylinder, and it was $2203/yr for me. That still seems pretty high.

Not good.

i would love to be in your situation....I pay 2000 every six months for my 96 GT http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/frown.gif

Ares 08-30-2001 08:41 PM

Something doesnt seem right for you to be getting that high a rate. Do you have a bad driving record? Lots of speeding tickets, accidents can cause alot of problems when it comes to rates.

I cant see how they can justify those prices unless they just dont want to insure car and figure maybe if your dessperate you will take the rate.

My brother is only 24/single and has a '00 Mustang GT also and pays about $1200 a year full coverage.

Both my dad and I have excellent driving records; no tickets in several years, no wrecks. All I can figure is that they don't want to insure fast cars.

What company does your brother use, Ares?

timbo3282 08-31-2001 10:54 AM

Have you checked into State Farm? After you get discounts for the anti-theft, multi-car, etc. I only pay $110/month. Give them a call.

i hate all of you with your low insurance rates. $334 a month for me. No one can question my love for mustangs (or is it stupidity???)

Ares 08-31-2001 04:16 PM

My brother uses Nationwide like me.
