Power Steering to Manual conversion

I have an '87 5.0, and it's got power steering. It leaks, it's heavy, it's in the way, it's noisy, it's nasty, and I have every reason to remove it.

Will a manual rack off an '84 fit and is that the year too get?

Also, if I buy the rebuilt rack from AutoZone; will they take my power rack for the core charge?

I heard if you get a manual rack from a 79 mustang, it will fit in place of your old one..ask around, i'm sure someone knows!

I don't have anyone around to ask though. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif

It's just me around here.

Well I went to both AutoZone and O'Reilly's and neither of them had one in stock and they said the warehouse's didn't have any and they were on backorder, so they couldn't get even order one for me.

Both had a manual rack listed for an '87. AutoZone had listed it for $114 plus a $50 core charge. O'Reilly's had it listed for $155 and a $75 core charge.

Where can I get a manual rack at for my car?

And no, I don't want to spend ~$400 for that Flaming River one.

I called NAPA and they have one for $183 plus an $83 core charge.

I'm going to get that.

I'll let you all know how the install goes.

The '84 rack will fit. The manual rack from any late model Mustang will work. I usually ask for an '89 four-cylinder stripper (no P/S, A/C, manual tranny). You'll need the lower rag joint as well since the splines are smaller on the manual rack. I've got the part number but its at home...any Ford dealership can order it for you. You may need to use the outer tie rod ends off your power rack since the manuals are about 2 inches shorter end-to-end. Some folks will replace both the inner and out TRE to make the rack the same length, but there's plenty of thread engagement when you reuse the power steering TRE's. Just make sure you've got at least 1 diameter's worth of thread engagement and you'll be fine.

LX XLR8R - did you need to change the rag joint or did it fit right up?

What all was involved in the swap?

Thanks

Do you have the part number for the correct lower rag joint?

Thanks

Here are some PN's - I can't verify if they are right or not, just found the page.

Well I just called a local Ford dealer here and they want $96 for that part. :/

"The part costs $29 at Ford; part no. is D9BZ 3A525 A."

I wish. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

Hey jeff, you said you would ask for a 89 gutted 4-banger rack, right???

Well my buddy has an 88 5.0 with a rack that is beyond $hitting the bed, and I have a 89 4-banger parts car.....

These racks are the same?

Is there someplace online that I could get this "lower rag joint" at for cheap?
