Got a question

anyone know what the gear ratio is on a 96 GT with the 5-speed is? I thought it was 308's. My friend thinks 273's, and I checked mine and it was 327's....what the buck is going on?

I'm pretty sure 3.08's where standard and 3.27's were optional. Not 100% sure though.

Not disputing here, but I think the standard ratio was the 2.73 with the optional 3.27.
My heavy-@ss convertible 96GT has the 2.73's.

It depends. My 96 had 2.73s in it also. Just look on the rear end differential. There is a metal tag that'll tell you what gear ratio is in it. For example, for 2.73s with posi it'll read 2L73. The L means you have the stock posi-trac. 2 73 is 2.73s without the posi. The other gears are 3L08, 3 08, 3L27, 3 27. 3.08s were not standard, though. This is an easy way to tell what gears are in your stang, stock.

I think the 3.08 was a std. for the auto. There again, a way to tell if your manual is stock.

I am new to the elite sect of Mustang "owners" club.

Anyways, it seems to me that these are some odd gears to be putting in a sports car. I was always told that the lower the number, the faster you end up going (good for MPH). The higher the number, the quicker you will get there (good for E.T.s). I am a stoplight-warrior and soon to be a 1/4mi contender (when the car gets modded). I would rather run a 12.5 at 101mph than a 13.0 at 110mph. Am I understanding gears correctly?
