Bad 1/4 mile times?

I just got back from the track, and i'am a little upset with my times. My best run all day was a 13.12@106mph. The temp was about 75 and sunney. I was hopeing to run at least a 12.90, is it my driving or the 3.73 not helping it get into the power band quick enough. I'am just disapointed right now. Any suggestions on what to do next besides a power adder. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/confused.gif

Thanks Will

I also went this weekend. My Cobra turned a 13.52@103.49, w/2.111 60'. This is a stock 97 w/KN and timing at 14*. You should be able to break into the 12's w/ what you have. Just keep trying. Where were you shifting at? What RPM did you cross at? In what gear?

I have the 6,600 rpm pill in my shift light so I think that i'am shifting at about 6,700 or a little over after I react. And i'am crossing the line in third at about 7,000.

Don't take this the wrong way but a good deal of it is your driving. Your 60ft's are not very good, you need some more practice basically. With Nitto's and 3.73's you should be able to get into the 1.8-1.9 60fts. You should be shifting right about 7K in all gears. Of course you'll be quicker with lower gears (numerically higher) but the 3.73's are not hurting you. There have been a few to dip into the 12's with stock gears in Cobras. Your MPH is definately there I would just concentrate on your launching and get some practice in and you'll see the ET's you're looking for.

Mustang92 you dont think that 7,000 is to high considering that my power curve drops off at about 6,500? I know that I suck at taking off, I can power shift good i've been told. Also I didn't take your comments the wrong way. I need all the help and advice I can get. What tire pressure do you recommend?

Thanks Will

I agree with what Mustang92 said, but I'd also suggest putting in some steeper gears. Most really sucessfull Mod-cobra guys are running 4.10, 4.30, or even steeper gears.

Your times are fine. Mustang92 is right get that 60' down in the 1.8-1.9 range and you should get into 12's easy.

A 2.0 60' time usally has me off by half a second in quarter.

As for gears I dont fully belive that considering I run 3.27's

Shifting at 7K is perfect. Think about it if you shift at peak RPM then your RPM's drop to a lower spot in the power band. When what you want to do is keep your car in the power band as long as possible. So by staying in it till 7K when you shift your RPM's stay higher in the next gear and will be making more power. My power band drops off at 5400 but I shift at 5900 or so. Try it a few passes and see what works for you.

For tire pressure try right around 15-18PSI best thing to do is just start off high and drop a PSI every pass till you find what works best for you. When I had the Nitto's I would just do a good 8-10 second burnout in 2nd gear. Then slip the clutch just enough to get the car rolling then stomp on it. That was good enough to pull a couple 1.77 60fts on DR's.

98snake, Shift at 7k. You should be pulling better 1/4 times with your 60'. Try removing your front passenger side parking lamp. Cut a hole in the plastic that will allow air to flow through into the fenderwell. This creates a ram air affect. I will almost promise you that you will gain 2mph and drop 1-2 tenths. Im not taking credit for this tip, just sharing the news.

Sorry, didnt see you had the MAC CAI. Next time you go to the track try the stock air box and a KN with that tip. I think the MAC sits too far down in the fenderwell for this to work.

Thanks for all the tips, next time I go to the track we will see if I can dip into the 12's.

Those arnt too bad of times at all. Cobras are extremely dificult to launch, although I am getting better. I agree with the above, try shifting at 7,000 rpms in every gear. I do the best that way. Good Luck getting into 12's.

Forgot to mention that my tire pressure was set to 32psi, the whole time because I left my tire gauge behind.
