FMS cam selection

This coming winter I am looking to install an aftermaket cam into my cobra. The GT40 iron heads are still on the car. I was looking into installing an F-cam. Does anyone run this cam, and will this work well with my heads or is it to aggresive. Will I need new valve springs and rockers or will the current 1.72s work. I'm looking for more upper RPM hp, but cant rev too high stock bottom end with rev limiter still at 6250.

I HAVE THE F CAM WITH THE GT40P'S BUT CCM SUGGESTED 1.6 ROCKERS AND THE CAM WORKS GREAT WITH THE COMBO

why are you set on a FMS cam, there are plenty of others out there that are superior

also, the F cam has .512" lift with 1.6 rockers which is .550" lift with your 1.72 rockers which i believe is WAY too much if you have stock pistons

if you are set on a ford cam, then i'd suggest either the E or B if your gonna keep your rockers

i'd check out anderson and trick flow cams to see what they have to offer, plus they're both cheaper than the FMS cams i believe

good luck

The F cam is a great cam in my opinion for the money-you can find them all over the internet on classifieds for $100. I have a couple friends running the F with 1.7 rockers and no problems. I have the F cam in my car with the stock rockers-however I bought it that way. It has a very broad rpm band with its 114 degree lobe center, which is good AND bad. It is an excellent street cam, I like it, probably wouldn't be my choice again as I like "peakier" cams with tighter lobe center's, but IMO if your gonna get a cam, get a cam. Call up Ed Curtis at FTI, call up Greg Lankford down at G & M Racing and tell them what you want out of the car and see what their cams will cost you-if its in the price range-do it, if not, see what they or whatever "reputable" shop you call would suggest for your combo and tastes. Crower has some really good cams to choose from also-I've always been a little partial to them as far as off the shelf cams.

Can you expand on why the 114 lsa is good and bad?

Are you sure the f-cam is 114? I dint think any of the ford cams were 114.

As far as I know (cam card is at home) the F303 cam has 110 lobe seperation and 288 degrees duration. I run one in my car (see sig) and love it. The car idles low enough to get some pretty good lope out of it without stalling or hesitating and my car is very streetable. I went with it because a few people told me it's a good blower cam, and since I plan to add a blower sometime soon I went with it. Some people advised against the F cam with my setup, but I'd buy it again if I had to do it over. After I get more into my mods I do plan to go with a custom grind though. But for an off the shelf cam I do think it's a good choice for my setup.

As for the 1.72 rockers - I am using stock E7 heads that have been shaved .03 and with my 1.6 rockers piston to valve clearance on the intake side checked .095 with my stock pistons. It's close, but it works. I don't know how much different the valve height is with the GT-40 heads so I can't comment on whether the 1.72 rockers will work or not. I know they would cause some serious damage with my heads. No matter what cam you go with it would be a good idea to check the clearence anyway.

The F cam is best suited to a supercharged application.

Go with a B cam and the 1.7's. It'll put you at about .514 lift, 224* duration. It should really pull up top. I don't remember the F cam being anywhere near the 114LSA. How'd they pull that off with more lift and duration than the B cam which is what, like 110? I have some info on it around here somewhere.

Your heads will not use anything more aggressive than that. They flow about 185cfm intake.

the e cam has 110. i think the b cam is 112, . 110 lsa is not blower friendly, so if your f-cam is 110, which i dont think it is, i wouldnt use it with a blower. i believe the f cam is 114 though, which is blower friendly

Dangerous Dave 11-21-2001 02:25 PM

Yes the F-cam is 114 LSA, E is 110, B is 112, X is 112

A wide lobe separation angle will give you good vaccuum, wont bleed off as much(which is why its a good blower cam-it'll hold the boost in the cylinders better) It'll have good power down low, mid, and high rpm's--on a cam with the same duration @.050 and same lift with a tighter LSA like 108 or 110-you will notice no gain or a loss in low end power(both torque and hp)-up until it hits the power band--it'll run past a cam with a wide center lobe-(talking naturally aspirated now) up at the top of the rpm band-which is excellent for a drag car. I'm a little more patient, and tolerable than alot of people, where a cam with 106 lsa works just fine to me on the street-just have to give it a little more gas at stoplights. This F-cam is fun though...I just have no aspirations at this point put a blower on this car and high rpm n/a cams don't bother me on the street, so gonna buy something a little more suited to my situation. It all depends on what your plans are for the car.

I've been running the F cam since March without problems. My cam card says that it has 109* on intake and 119* exhaust separation. 109+119=228/2=114 avg. lobe sep. Rated at 0.050" 226* duration and .512" lift.

I'm not sure but I think in the FRPP catalog it states that the cam is recommended for 5-speed manual cars, and is blower friendly.
Anyways, I would consider this cam, but don't limit your search to just Ford's lineup, Crane and Comp, just to name a couple make some great cams, and I've been hearing some good things about Trick Flow's cams.

the e-cam or 2040 cam will work fine with a 15 psi blower according to crane
