4 lug or 5 lug

What year/model's in the 87-93 mustangs have 5 lug bolt patterns. I am gonnna invest in my first mustang at the first of the year. I want one with a 5 lug pattern if possible b/c i wanna put new model mustang wheels on it. I guess if i get one that is 4 lug, i will change rear ends anyways so i will go ahead and convert it to 5 lug. I know this isnt the right forum but the forum it should go in only had 1 post in it. I am a newbie to these boards but i am a long time member at rangerforum.com.
Thanx 4 any help guyz,
Kevin:D

im pretty positive that all 87-93 are 4 lug, unless someone converted

Actually, the 93 Cobra came with 5 lugs, as did all Saleen Mustangs.

Since you're already a member of the Ranger forum, you should know that I converted my 4 lug rear to 5 lugs by using Ranger brakes. The drums are 10" x 2-1/4, which is better than the stock 9" x 2 brakes. All you need are the backing plates, drums, and axles from a 6 cylinder Ranger.

The fronts are easily converted by using discs from an '85 Lincoln LSC. Any parts store should have them. Its a bolt-on deal.

Hope this helps.

If you use lincoin rotors up front you can't run 96+ Gt rims or 98+ Cobra rims. They won't clear the dust caps on the lincoin rotors. You could install 1/2" spacers, but you would need longer wheel studs for safety's sake.

If you want to run 96+ GT rims or 98+ Cobra rims you'll need to swap in the spindels, rotors, and calapers from a 94 or 95 Mustang(dosen't have to be a GT)

he forgot to say that both axles have to be from the ranger's drivers side

The Lincoln rotors definitely fit the Cobra R wheels with 5.95" backspacing. I'm guessing that other Mustang wheels will fit, since they are narrower than the Cobra R wheels and have similar offset.

Thanx guys. Now all i need to do is find me a stang for the rite price!!! Looks like i'll either convert the stang or ill put those wheels and my ranger cause im sure i cant afford a cobra, especially insurance too. This is an awesome board and site that you guys have.

Later,
Kevin

Actually, not to nit pick, but the 93 cobra has 4 lug axles, not 5 lug. The 93 Cobra R had the 5 lug. And 87 was the first year that the Saleen mustangs started to use 5 lug axles. BTW to convert a fox body to 5 lug, disc brakes all around, will cost you near $2000- thats rotors, spindles, axle shafts, hubs, calipers, master cylinder, proportioning valve, hardware etc. Its quite expensive. Hope this helps.

Other than a limited selection of wheels that will fit, is there a real performance reason to upgrade to 5 lugs over 4? If it's a weakness issue, would it work to just have stronger lugs pressed into the stock brakes?

Mach 1 11-28-2001 03:57 AM

No, you dont need them from a strength perspective. My friend ran mid 10's pulling the wheels with 4 lugs, and never had a problem.

My bad, I thought the standard 93 Cobra was equipped with 5 lugs as well as the 85-86 Saleens.

Going with 5 lug discs doesn't have to cost $2,000 if you can secure used parts from a later model, I believe 96-98.

Mach 1, what part of georgia are you from. I am about 20 minutes north of rome georgia, if u know where that is, in the northwesteren part. Also i should have known the 93 cobra's are 4 lug because a friend of mine has a 93 lx5.0 with the 93 cobra's on it.

Commerce is a real nice track. I was there for Fun Ford weekend a couple times. You have the mountains and a little cooler weather than down here, where its flat, ugly, and too dam hot!

Here is some very helpful information:
http://svo73mm.cjb.net/

Go the easy route and buy a 95 Mustang with a 5.0L in it.
