Can my paint be saved?
 

I have almost given up on my 89 GT. When I first got it about 2 months ago, it needed some paint work...BADLY. Nothing major, it just had ALOT of swirls and scratches.

After 13 coats of Zaino, a majority of the scratches are covered but there are some that look to be deep into the paint. Here's my problem:

My car doesn't have a clearcoat. Since it doesn't have any clear, I was scared away from wet sanding...afraid of sanding down the paint and dulling the color. So should I try wet sanding even though I don't have a clearcoat?? If I can't find a solution, I'm going to have the car repainted next spring with some nice ghost flames and LOTS OF CLEAR!!

I'd just do what you can with polish and wax, and start saving your cash. Then I'd go ahead and have someone do a QUALITY job with your scheme you mentioned. That sounds like it would look damn nice! Good luck!

I had the same problem with mine before I got it re-painted.
I had a friend buff it with a high speed buffer and it looked great for about a week. I would just save your money like 6t9pony said.

I'd probably save my money...but for a quick fix...wet sand with 1200 and go to the paint store and get them to put some clear in a can for ya..usually costs about 20.00 per can. spray the clear and buff the hell out of it. but if i were you I'd save my $$ for a kick a$$ paint job..A friend of mine put ghost flames on his '32 coupe and they are way cool... say goodbye

I wouldnt suggest wet sanding until you know what kind of paint it is. Urethane, lacquer, enamel? Lacquer is not very durable, so if you wet sand it, take it very easy. Urethane is extremely tough, I wouldnt worry about sanding this. If its fully cured you will work your a$$ off on it. Enamel just plain sucks, well at least for a good shine anyway. I would not suggest wet sanding this unless you knew exactly what brand it was, then ask someone who has done it.

Whatever kind of paint it is, it's very soft. When I was putting my first couple coats of zaino on, I would notice some black coming off onto my towel. Now with 13 coats, there is no black coming off. The polish built up a layer on the paint.

Since the car is black already, a re-paint should be easy. I'm not looking for a 10k paint job. I just want the outside repainted black. I'm looking at around 5k not including the flames.

You should be able to find a good paint job for a lot less than that.

I had mine done and I did get a really good deal because the guy is a friend but I paid 1500.00 including the flames, new hood, new headlights, body work, and It was done right.

You should be able to find a real good paint job for around 2000.00.

When I got my car painted, my dad and I did all the body work so we didn't get any labor charged for that. And we went to the paint store and picked out the paint and bought everything needed including primer, activator, and that good stuff, ourselves. My dad works with the guy who paints cars as a hobby and sidejob so he let us come out and help him mask everything off. So all he charged us was $350 for spraying it! Nice huh!?!? He did an awesome job too. No runs, no dust, nothing. Beautiful. All in all, the paint job ended up costing us about $1200 for spraying and the paint itself. We used DuPont IMRON. Very durable and tough paint. It looked great. I can't wait until I get to see my fastback painted BRIGHT YELLOW!!!!!!:D :cool:
