need some help from old time rodders
Hi I am new to your forum. I own a 66, mustang with a boss 302. The car is mildly rodded, but there is one thing I have no clue how to do. Looking at some of the old rodding mags I noticed flames coming out of the exhuast. I have heard this is done by spark plugs lighting the unused gas fumes from the exhaust. My question is does anyone know how to do this mod, or even heard about it before? Thanks Brock.

Two ways I know of is...1st the way we [me] did it back in the early 60's. No money, just alot of balls. I ran an extra spark plug wire from under the hood, through the car, through the trunk and in the tailpipe with a spark plug. Used Packard 440 wire. When I wanted to flame throw I would stop and replace one plug wire in the dist. cap with the long wire going out back. Drive up a steep hill in PA and roar down it, downshift the flathead Ford to 2 gear and pump the gas and pull the choke out. Boy! I would light the road up behind me.
The other way, and more expensive way is to have an second ignition system with its own coil run off a vibrator that would cause the plugs to fire in the pipes. Same effect, mucho more $$$. |
I think the way it was done way back when was to mount a coil in the trunk with a spark plug wire leading to a spark plug mounted a foot in front of the exhaust exit. Then a toggle switch was used on the dash to send juice to that coil that supplied that spark plug. Extra gas would be in the exhaust especially when letting off after reving up. Switching the toggle switch off and on would supply the spark to light the gas laden exhaust and create the pyrotechnics. I never did this but I think that's how it worked.

Oh Merc.....you're such a perv....why don't you get your mind off that stuff.....
But seriously....Gearhead999......a vibrator? Kinky.....hehe....:p :D |
I know now that is doesn't sound right. But, a buddy had the "vibrator" out of a tube car radio. It was a metal tube looking thing [here I go again putting my foot in mouth] that plugged into the radio where the tubes were. Had 4 prongs.
I did run the Packard wire through my 52 Ford Convert, flathead, 3 duces, under the seats through the trunk and out the back. I hooked a sparkplug to end and stuffed it up one of the tailpipes, had dual "scavanger pipes", about a foot or so. Get up a large hill hook it up, roar down hill in 2nd gear. Back off it and pump gas and pull choke out. It would light the road up behind us. Great fun. Now I realize why I could never keep a drivers license. |
Hahaha...that sounds like a blast Gearhead!!

So this wont come back and back fire on ya will it? It just seems that the extra gasses exploding, would work there way back up the pipe to the motor, is this possible?
|
Only if you have a burnt exhaust valve. Otherwise, the return vacuum will always be overpowered by the spent exhaust mixture. Now, if you've got a burnt exhaust valve, you would create enough vacuum in the exhaust to pull the mixture back up to the block, but it still wouldn't cause any harm.
Take care, -Chris |
They make kits for flamethrowing try here www.hotrodsofnorco.com just go through the site the kits are there

I never did fiqure it out, but when i first got my car, I used to be able to rev it up, it would then pop with a 2 foot flame shooting out. it no longer does it(thinking it was the carb) but it was fun while it lasted. I have duel exhaust coming out in front of the rear tires and my muffers are Cherry bombs.
