Need advice on T. Convertor
I've recently picked up a very nice 90 LX Conv. I've done minor mods. Shorty header, off-road pipe, 3 chamber flows, cold air, Ported stock heads, 1.7 rollers, pulleys,3:55 gears. Now is time for convertor (I've got to keep the auto and like the overdrive part of AOD) but I don't know whick to go with, Lock-up or non-lockup. I hate how the thing goes into lock up in 3rd and 4th immediately, but like the gas milage. Anybody have some history with these things. Any help would be appreciated.

A lock up converter has nothing to do with your shift patterns. You want it if you like fuel economy. You really should have done with 3.73's or 4.10's with the AOD though. Get a PI Stallion converter about 2800rpm stall.
You should love the additional pull outta the hole! |
I would go non-lock up. Mine doesnt lock up, and the difference in RPM is neglible.

get a non lock up! i have a lock up converter, it locks in 3rd and 4th and i don't like it too much. like Mach 1 said the difference in RPM is neglible. if you plan on adding gears the rpm's will be higher and closer to the stall speed of the converter anyway. when you get a converter also get a trans cooler and a remote filter. a stall converter will run the tranny hotter and additional cooling is nice. the filter will save your tranny if the converter decides to let go!

I've also got the non lock-up unit and have been fairly satisfied.
However, I've talked with different guys who will tell you different things. Some say, if you've got enough power in the mid rpm ranges, a lock up in 3rd will actually help you get down the track faster by giving you a one to one connection and eliminating the power lost in slippage and heat. You've just got to have the power to pull through it. --nathan |
