Quick suspension ?'s

Can any of the suspension gurus give me a quick rundown on some of the more important pieces to replace/install to lower 60' times. I know the drill about stickier tires and subframes but what about shocks/struts, springs, control arms? I was just wanting to know the dynamics of how everything works in stock form as opposed to aftermarket so I'll be better informed when I try to decide what to get next. There are so many aftermarket options, I want to be sure what I buy is what I want/need. I want (like a lot of people) a streetable car that can cut decent 60' times. Decent meaning a lot better than 2.2x that I was getting with stock suspension, street tires, & 2.73's.
