Upgraded alternator with UD pullies?
 

We're thinking about boltin on underdrive pullies and we may need to replace alternator (not charging battery), any suggestions on heavier alternator that will handle possibly a large stereo - amp size? Anyone had good success buying rebuilt alternators autozone, trak auto etc?

I would upgrade to a later model ford alternator. Like one off of a 94-95 mustang. It will bolt right on with little trouble and puts out 130amps vs 65 amps (87-93 stang). There is some slight grinding that will need to be done to your bracket and a heavy gauge (4awg) charging cable will need to be run to handle the larger output. http://66.70.5.241/8793mustang.pdf

You can get one from a parts store, but I wouldn't recommend a reman alt to a mustang lover. I think PA performance's new 3g alternators are the same price anyway. http://www.pa-performance.com

If you really want to go overboard like I did... check out http://www.mean-green.com I guess I got a little fed up after going through 3 reman alts. This sucker puts out 100amps at idle.

Dude I know Autozone has good prices ,but unless you like swapping parts every couple of months I would stay away. There is a reason they offer a lifetime replacement warranty, because there parts suck!

im going to upgrade to a 3g from a later modle stang later on..but i have a question bout my volt meter and charging...

ok i have a ford racing mechanical volt meter ...and some times when im driving it reads almost all the way up?? is that right..and if a alternator puts out 100 at idle ..arnt there electrical things in the car that could blow out..a freind of mine had a 89 grand prix with digital dash and his alt regulator went out and pushed to much volts and blew all his dash lights out? can this happen to a stang?

I upgraded to a rebuilt 95 GT alternator from Auto Zone and have had it almost a year now. It's still going strong. I have under drive pullies including the alternator pullie and it still charges a lot better than the original alternator did.

Highly recommended upgrade.

If you volt gauge is going above 14.5V somethings wrong. The regulator is probably toast. I mention 100amps @ idle, this is with a 700 watt stereo, markVII fan (45amps), lights on, and the heater on. My volt meter dropped from 14.2V to 13.5V.

Before I got the fan and while I still had the stock alternator it would idle at 13.5V (no underdrives) and drop to 12V when I turned everything on. 12V definetly isn't enough potential (voltage) to charge a car battery. I can't believe ford put a 65amp alternator on such a modern car. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about frying anything as long as you install a larger charging cable and an inline fuse.
