i want to race him do you guys think i can beat him???

Green92LX 03-20-2001 04:28 PM

Drivers being of equal standings, you should thrash him...at least I used to when I was stock

Heck, I ran a 95 hardtop the other night with my coupe (208K) and spanked him all over the road.

Fox bodies got the edge

Uuuuhhhh i would have to disagree, the only difference between you 2 is that he as a 5 speed, and you dont, and unfortunately that makes a big difference if he knows how to shift. Im not a big fan of the 4.6, if you had a 5 speed, i think you would take him. But with a 5 speed skill does come into play, so if he is a horrible shift, then you may still beat him, but dont count on it.

You should take him pretty well. The first model 4.6s don't have the power that the second ones (current) do. Also, he has a couple hundred pounds of weight with the softop. Just launch well (you do know how to launch the AOD? if not, don't be shy, ask!) and do the shuffle. If you had a 5spd, you would slap him silly like a small child. With the AOD, I think you can still do it. Maybe someone else can dig up some numbers?

How do you launch properly? Also, is it possible to launch without your tires spinning all over the road?

They should run fairly close but I would think the 5.0 should edge it out. You never know though if your car or his is running at it's optimum unless you race.

I'm gonna give the 5.0 a 350lb weight advantage, which should offset the 5spd versus the auto, but it's not going to be an easy win.

The 5.0 should edge it out though.

You guys said exactly what I was going to say. As long as you hold 2nd you should win because he is heavier.

Now this I wouldn't have thought to say, thats just down right funny http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

I have a '95 mustang gt convert 5-spd. Same weight, but i got the 5.oh http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif. I race 4.6s all the time with the same result, 1 car length. I even have about 150lbs extra from the rollcage! But the best kill was a 4.6 with pulleys, hollow cats, flows, headers, chip, clutch, and 4:10s. I beat him like I always beat 4.6s, 1 car. Case in point: never underestimate the 5L

Ahhh, the AOD launch, very simple.
Step 1. Place your left foot firmly on the brake
Step 2. Place your right foot on the gas
Step 3. Using right foot, bring revs to a hold at about 1500 (?) rpm
Step 4. When the light changes, let go of the brake, and then begin to depress the gas fully.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Thats the only way to keep from spinning. With all the torque that this car produces, you cant just mash the pedal off the line, even in the AOD. You simply have to slowly press the pedal at first, and after .5-1 sec you should have your foot pressed on the floor (press all the way). The only way to really know is to play around with it, find out how quickly you can press the pedal down, and what rpm you can launch at w/o spinning. On the shuffle, start out with the 'gear selector lever' in the "1" position, and when the rpms reach about 5k, push it up to the "d". The tranny will take a few hundred rpm to shift, and when its done shifting, pull the selector back to "1". The tranny will then stay in 2nd gear until you push the selector up to "d" or "circle D".

I was also wanting to improve my launches on my 5spd. Can anyone help with this? I am in the dark as to where the right shift points are on a 5.0L w/ t-5 and where and how to launch. Thanks.

here is the way I launch (took a while to get it right)
rpms to 1300-1500

clutch slightly lifted off the floor (1-2 inches)

on 3rd amber release clutch smoothly while feeding gas evenly(practice practice practice is the only way to get it without spin)

The other way I use is not good for the clutch...I ONLY DO THIS ONCE IN A WHILE...

rpms to 3500

clutch off the floor about 1-2 inches

slowly let out the clutch allowing slippage so you dont spin em...

Shift points vary for each car but the general rule is 5200-5500
