1997 moutaineer 5.0L
i know its not a mustang but i bought a 1997 mountaineer and it has every option including the 5.0 the only thing is its got 106000 miles. i bought it for 7500 so i think i got a pretty good deal, it runs perfect and the body is flawless, i just did a tune up what i need to know is what should i look for if anything is gonna go wrong.

Since that Mountaineer has the coveted GT-40p heads and the Explorer intake (very similar to the Cobra), I would stick a different cam in there and some forged HO pistons. A little exhaust work and voila, 320hp. :D
You should have AWD, not 4WD, which will be killer in snow. I'm not familiar with any real problems on those trucks, but then again, I haven't really looked into them. Killer vehicles though! |
I have a 96 Ford Explorer with the AWD V8. All Explorer/Mountaineers with the V8 were equipped with a trailer tow package (includes auto trans cooler, super engine coling, HD flasher, 4 pin wiring harness). They also have a 3.73 limited slip rear.
The exhaust on the V8 is similar to Mustangs in that they have factory headers and 4 catalytic converters. The muffler is a dual inlet single outlet set up. Summit only lists a cat back system for the 4.0L V6 on 91-94 Explorers but if you call them they have a cat back system from Flowmaster for the 97 and up V8s. It will also fit 96's since the exhaust is the same. I will be installing this system in the Spring. Hope this is helpful. |
