Z303, Anyone running it???

My friend is wanting to trade a new Z303 cam to me. I was wondering if I would have to have the pistons fly cut in order to run it. I am running flat top pistons with the Holley aluminum heads with 1.94/1.60 valves. Is this a good cam to run with nitrous? Thanks for the advice!

Can anybody help me out please???

I am not a cam expert but I would think that would be a little too much cam for your combination. I do not know how much clearance those pistons will allow but I would think it would clear but you might have problems and the only way to be sure is to check clearance when installing it.
I think the x cam would be a better choice but an even better idea would be to call comp cams cam hotline and ask what they recommend.

Almost any cam with a split pattern should be a good nitrous cam.

Thanks for your input, but it says in my sig that I still have fuel injection on my car, but I just recently changed it over to carb. The carb is a 750 Double Pumper with a Victor Jr. intake!!! I really need to know the answer to question in my first post about my valves and the Z303 cam??? Thanks again

I would think it would clear but I don't think anyone is going to be able to tell you for sure. You will have to check your clearance when you get it. I still think it is too big for what you have.

Well I plan on doing some porting and eventually getting higher compression pistons or even a 347. I would really like to go to the 408 but right now it isn't in my budget for the extra parts that I would need.

James
Are you running carb or EFI?

Five0 01-13-2002 07:21 PM

For a 347 it might be a good cam but for what you have now you would have to spin the hell out of it.

Don't get too carried away with the cam or you will not be getting the most out of your combo.

I would still call comp cams and ask what they recommend for what you have and want to do. JMO

What size cam are you running your combo? and what exactly is your combo?

Five0 01-14-2002 06:54 AM

When I had the 302 I was running a 224/230@.050 w/.544 lift and 112 lobe.

I am running a 347 now and I need a bigger cam because of the more cu in.
I am probably going to go with a 232/244 w/.650 lift or some where in that ball park.

Go to my sig to see my combo.

Alright thanks again for the info man!!!

Yes you will have to notch your pistons. And yes "Cam-Zilla" is probably too much cam for you. ;)

Five0 01-14-2002 08:28 PM

He does have aftermarket pistons so I don't know what kind of lift they allow and you have to remember in his first post he has 1.94 1.60 valves. I think it will go, but it might not but defiantly too much cam.

Mean50 01-15-2002 09:28 AM

I will be going to a C-4 with a 3500 stall and a dual stage nitrous kit.
I don't understand why you think that is way too much cam. We are running a cam with around .530 lift and 300 duration in our streetrod. It has flat top pistons with my the stock heads off my mustang ported, torker 289 intake, and a 600 holley. It runs real strong. It is pro-streeted and it will burn those big tires off at Bristol, TN while running a 13.3 @ 101 and 12.1 @ 118 with 150 shot (tire melting).

He thinks it's too big because....it's too big. You'll have to spin the crap out of a 306 to make use of that cam, and hydraulic rollers don't like going higher than 6500 revs. Keep in mind the street rod probably weights 800-900 pounds LESS than your Mustang, and a bigger cam won't affect it as badly. The Z303 would work much better in a 347.

Nitrous cams have a low 108-111 lobe separation, dunno what the Z is. Why not get a custom ground cam for nitrous if thats what your gonna do. prolly $150 to $250 ballpark figures. At least it will work and be for your combo. When you chang that combo ie. 347 or 408 things change anyway, and you'd have to sell cam anyways. John
