How much money did you spend to go how fast?
 

I know that I am not the only one that keeps a full Excel spreadsheet of every penny spent and every bolt turned on my stang... okay maybe not everyone is as crazy as I am, but I'm sure some of you are keeping track of how much cash you dumped into your stang. Tell us how fast you got for how much you spent!

I just wanted to let you know that you're not the only one. I also have an Excel Spreadsheet, but it's on my home computer and I'm at work right now so I can't give you any numbers. As far as how fast, well I'm going to be installing quite a bit of stuff in the near future that I've already bought, so I don't know yet.

HA HA, I knew that I wasn't the only one!

So I did some calculations and let's see... I spent $2500 on my car last year. Thus far I have dumped $1794.71 (kinda high only because of a new tranny). I haven't had it dynoed but dozens of others with the same stock setup have... I'm guessing 240 flywheel or so, so thats like what 200 rwhp. So I'm looking at $8.97 per horse without the car and $21.47 per horse with the car.

Yeah, I too keep an Excel spreadsheet and it's not pretty.

With new motor, suspension, tires, wheels, stereo, maintanance, and almost everything else other than a power-adder or new paint... I'm tipping the scales at just over $13,000 invested (that includes the $6,500 i bought it for in 1995). Just think if I would've bought top-of-the-line heads/intake/stroker kit..... I'd be up over $15,000.

Then again, I have a $13,000 Mustang that can hang/beat $25,000-30,000 Cameros and Cobras..... now I don't feel so bad!:D

None! I have't gone fast yet :) As for the Excel thing, yes I do keep track of mods, but only the ones I want to do. I'd hate to add up all the money I've spent on this thing already. And to think there's more to come.....

lmao...i used to keep a record of all the parts i bought and how much money I spent on them in a small notebook, but believe me, after after many thousands of dollars, you get disgusted looking at it, tell yourself you can never sell your car because you have to much money in it, and burn the notebook!

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!

Oh man, I learned that lesson with my first baby. She was a 1969 Chevelle SS, and I kept every single receipt, even fuel filters. I stopped entering amounts in my ledger after 3 years when I reached $10k (including the $1200 I paid for it), and the car was NOT what I thought a car with $10k dumped into it should be like. I got killer deals on alot of my parts, too. I got my heads, which were fresh from the machine shop after having over $1000 worth of work done to them, my intake (Holley Strip Dominator), my valve covers (tall Moroso chrome) and my oil pan (7 quart strip Moroso), all of which were never used, for $300 total! I probably spent another $5k on it before I finally sold it. I sold it for $4500, and that was damn good money for a 17 year old Chevelle in 1986, but it wasn't a very good return on my $15k investment. Then again, I made a couple thousand at the street races with that car, so I guess I made half my money back.

I know all too well how fast parts add up today, too. I see it on every job order I complete for my customers. I still won't ever keep a record like that for one of my vehicles again, unless the goal is to sell it.

Yes, it is extremely amazing how fast the money adds up, yet your car still needs this and that, and doesnt look anything like the car you could have had for $15-$20K.

I believe this is probably the most un-practicle, expensive hobby going, but if you have that "need for speed", you got to do something.

I guess I can blame it on my sisters boyfriend in high school who used to ride me around in his Chevelle and Roadrunner, both sweet and fast rides. Once you get thrown back in the seat under hard acceleration, you just need more.......and then you have the cops watching you continuosly, spend more on gas, traffic and speeding laws tickets....

No spreadsheets for me, just a growing pile of receipts stacking up on the garage steps.
Probably around $4000 now and that is mostly suspension, rear end, brakes, tires, paint, and exterior goodies. (no labor, I do everything myself.)
Already spent 1500 this fall to collect my heads, cam, and intake. I'll be starting that project this week.
I try to by used stuff wherever I can, especially if it is non-mechanical/electrical or if it can be refurbished with new (better) components. I get lots of little stuff from "Pull your own" lots.

As much fun as they are, these cars can be huge $$ vacuums. Then there are the non-direct costs- entry fees, clothing/helmets, travel costs, gas, motels....etc. Insurance, loan interest, insurance,.......it never ends.

I just pay someone to keep track of what I spend on my car. Every month I get a detailed list of what and when I spend on it. :D

i did a little fast add up of parts and i come up with around 19,000-20,000. the bad thing is i only paid 1,500for the car.

AAWWWW, come on guys. That's the fun of it! Knowing that you spent all your hard earned cash on your baby! That's why you love it... I'll never stop adding it up. It's interesting. I like some of you am trying to put together a stang that's as fast as possible for as cheap as possible.

Oh man, I didn't even think about that. I got alot of tickets in that Chevelle. I'd say enough to wallpaper a small bathroom. Add another $1000+.

I paid $6900.00 for the car 2 years ago,
Since then, I've spent about another $12,000 on a brand new motor, trans, exhaust, rear end, accessories, new seats, interior, carpet, etc. I will be getting my Paxton probably this week. Then I need to get a roll bar, subframe connectors, rear suspension, rims, tires, bodywork, blah, blah, blah, blah. I'm sure I will spend approx $8,000 - $9,000 more until I get the car to where I wanted it to be when I bought it. Hopefully it will be less than $30,000 when it is done, but it should do 11's, be able to go anywhere and have fun with the top down all at the same time! I almost bought a new 99 Cobra convertable when I bought this one. It would have been the same price ($31,000) but not quite as unique.

Spent 4000 for the car. Then put 2800 into it and my times are in my SIG. The motor time was on a perfect day and it hasent run that time sence. My normal times on motor are 12.80 @ 106 I dont think i can ever get another 12.63 @ 109 again with the same setup. Like i said it was a perfect day that day. Cold and with a 20 MPH tailwind.:D

my car doesn't look as good as yours probably do (yet), but i spent $500 bucks on the chassis with a blown motor and tranny. spent $500 on a motor from a buddy of mine, got a tranny out of a junker in a salvage yard for $50. bolted it all in, and nickel and dimed myself to death ($1000). car did mid 12's at 110. now, there was alot more money in the motor than what i paid for it, but i traded a little bit of manual labor for it with the cash.

the car is now being restored. actually, i am still collecting the parts, plan to crank the first wrench come spring. doing the math on what the car should cost, with all the parts i am planning on buying, puts me in the 3500 dollar range of added cost. but anyone that has restored a car can tell you, when you plan on 3500 to spend, better have 7000 just in case. just the way it goes. when the car is finally done, it will go 11's. and be a show car to boot.

so if you put all of that together, you have a grand total of about $9000. to have a show car that runs 11's. thuis of course is doing all of the work myself.(sort of, i have friends that help alot)

I paid 3,550 for my car 3 yrs ago. We wont mention the 1,250 cash price to rebuild the AOD a week later. She was bone stock w/120,000 on her. My mods are in sig and the AOD has since crapped out again, hence the c-4 and convertor which I dropped a grand into purchase and putting the good stuff in. My times are 1/8 8.85 motor, 7.23 squeeze. 1/4 13.86 motor 11.77 squeeze. John
