Can i run mobil1 15W50?
 

I got a case of it, gave to me for free, is it too thick? i dont want to waste it, maybe i can mix it with some 10w30, what would u do? this stuff is 4.99$ a qt:eek: so im using it somehow.

Your car should take 5w30 or 10w30. The 15w40 should be fine in your car. Never mix two different weight oils. Most car makers require the use of lower weight oils to bring up fuel mileage to goverment specs. Keep a eye on oil level since your changing brands. The different detergents in oil might work at any varnish around seals and cause some oil consumption. Hope I helped.

I'd take it to your favorite auto parts store and exchange it for 10w30. As far as using Mobil1, I swear by it, but if you've got alot of miles on your engine using regular oil already, it could cause problems.

now i have run synthetic in the past, I have used exxon durablend 20w50 racing oil before also, (is that heavier then 15w50?) but I thought that was a lil too heavy, ill just use it, and see what happens thnx.:p

If I were you I wouldn't mix synthetic oil and conventional oil. Its not a good idea because the synthetic oil has a tendancy to break down conventional oil and the conventional oil's detergents destroy the synthetic oils properties. My boss told me this after he learned the "hard way." Thats how he explained it to me, but the lingo might be a little off since he is a medical engineer and the vocab is similar but not always the same. But I do know that a blended oil is not the same as mixing synthetic and conventional, because the blend is made to work with the right properties as to not break either down.

I did run the 15-50 in my car over the summer. I found that it was heavier and didn't allow my engine to rev quite as fast, but I didn't burn it as fast as the 10-30 I was using before.

The lower wieght oils are for colder climates and are thiner. The Higher weight oils are thicker and perform better at higher temps.

In (northern) Canada people even run 0W30 oil. It helps when the temperatures extend down to -40 degrees for long periods of time.

I think us guys way down south can get away with using 15-50 oil, it protects better when it gets hot, and we don't need the cold temp protection (Texans don't even know the meaning of cold :) ).

I used to run sythetic 5W50 when I lived in Edmonton, Canada.

Yes everyone has been helpful, im gonna change it now, lol yea us texans dont know what cold is, all the tourist here in s.a some from up north, walk around here in shorts saying its warm, hehe and thats in the upper 30's, upper 30s is cold for me, lol and when it drops around 20* its like the whole city shuts down..:eek:

Yea thicker oil might slow the reving of a motor i agree, but full synthetics can free up hp....thnx again

Well I almost always run synthetic 10W-30 so when I used 15W-50 I noticed the lag in rev speed.

has anyone ever run 10W-40? my dad was telling me i should try that in my car and see how it works. any opinions?

10W 40 is just a bit thicker when at operating temp. That wont hurt a thing. It would be good in the summer heat, but not in a New England winter.

Use the oil and dont worry about it. You can mix oils also, whoever said you cant is wrong.

Ive switched my truck to synthetic, back to conventional, back to synthetic, whatever I happen to find a deal on, doesnt matter...

Alright, but i think they meant mixing oils in the same oil change, thnx, but its a done deal now.
