classic plates
 

I figured I would place this question in this forum because you guys would most likely know the answer.
How old does a car have to be to get classic plates? Is it 20 or 25 years? I want to get classic plates for my '82 GT if it's old enough yet.

You need to check with the DMV for the state you'll be driving it in. Each state decides for itself, so there are not uniform ages everywhere. It's a state to state thing. In fact, at last count, I believe that 9 states don't have any kind of special plate for older vehicles at all.

I don't think it's old enough yet plus a Classic Plate is supposed to be on a stock vehicle. I have a PA. Collectable Vehicle plate on my 86 Capri 5.0. Your car must be modified and be in show condition. You have to get a reconstruted title. This will exempt you from emissions test and is a permanate plate like a classic. Check with a tag place about it. RAY

Its 25 years in MS. All you have to do here is show the title at the DMV. Plus, once you have 'em you never have to renew. Its really cool.

What's the DMV going to do...ask me to see the car to see what kind of condition it's in?
Show condition for some people isn't show condition for others. How would that be decided?
I'm not trying to be a smart *** but I'm just curious.

You have to send pictures of the engine compatment, the interior, the undercarraige, and exterior front, back, and both sides. You must send all the reciepts for the parts you used to modify it. If you bought the parts used you must have reciepts that have the vin number that of the vehicle that the parts came off. You have to right in detail everything that is modified on the car. You have to take the car to a state inspection mechanic and have him sign and put his inspection license number on all the pictures and inspect the vehicle to insure all the modifications are done correct and are safe. This is what I had to do to get the Collectable Vehicle Plate. I sent $10,600.00 worth of reciepts and everything else they asked for and I had my tag in about three weeks. It was a one time charge of $65.00 and you never have to renew it. RAy

My '82 is in very good condition considering it's age but no where near mint condition. I 've had the car since 1990 and never thought I would end up keeping her for all these years. The problem is I don't have all the documentation of all the stuff I did to it or half the receipts.
In other words, I would have to completly restore the car and log all the work I did....correct?
Oh well, there's always my '88GT that's bone stock and garaged kept. All I need is the year 2013 to roll around!!

In Florida I'm pretty sure it is 20 years. You can go to the auto flea market and purchase an old Florida plate from one of the vendors. The plate has to be the same year as the car. Then you can apply to the state to have that plate on your car.

You can't restore the plate, so they say. In about a month you get the year sticker for the older plate and you can put it on the car. It has to be renewed yearly just like a normal plate. You also have to turn in any "modern" plate that you had on your ride.

I have a 68 Florida plate on my 68 Mustang. Looks good and I get alot of questions about it.

Here in CA when you're putting an older vehicle back on the road they'll let you keep the original plate and I'm glad because I still have mine.

No classic status that I know of tho. Pay your fees every year just like everybody else.
