Guesstimate the Snake's Power

I know this is all guesstimation, and is definitely an indefinite science, but I figured someone would have similar mods, and the dyno to show their power #'s. Plus, I'm really bored right now, so here goes:

Anyone want to guess how much power my cobra is making? It's got:

Mac CAI
March Pulleys
FMS Shorty Headers
Mac H-pipe w/cats
Flowmaster 2 chambers

Come to think of it, Im not even sure how much power the 5.0 cobras came with stock. I thought it was 240, but with the standard GT engine plus GT40 heads, cobra intake and 65mm throttle body, how can it just be making 15 more hp than a GT?!?!

Last question: I'm gonna bump the timing this weekend too, what should I set it at (conservatively).

Thanks.

14* is usually pretty good for timing.... that's what I'm running. If you're running around with 10-12* timing, you are going to be surprised at how much of a difference a bump in timing will make.

I believe the 94-95 Cobra's did not have the 65mm t-body. I think they came with a 60mm opening.

Remember, Ford jacked with the HP #s in 1993. I've been told the Cobra motors would have been rated at 260HP if they would have come out in 1992. I'd say you've added a legit 15-20 HP with your mods. You're probably around 280 HP.

I have a motor that's very similar to your Snake's. You should really think about swapping the cam for something a little more aggressive.

I've heard that the cam is what makes the 94-95 Cobra engines suck. Not sure what everyone uses for the GT40 heads and intake though.

Jason,

First thing you need to do is buy the Ford RPM Extender. You'll so a big increase of horsepower ... you'll thank me. I'll tell ya more about it when I see you tomarrow.

Incorrect. They came with a 62mm opening but close enough.

The stock 5.0 Cobra was rated at 240hp at the crank. And yes this is only 15hp more than the stock 5.0L even though they added the following:
  • GT-40 Cast Iron Heads
  • Revised Cam
  • GT-40 lower intake manifold
  • Cobra upper intake plenum
  • Oil cooler
  • 62mm Throttle Body
  • 72mm??? MAF
  • Revised stainless steel headers
  • 24lb injectors
  • and some more....

If you look at the Ford Motorsport Catalog, Ford sells a kit for the 94-95 GT's that they advertise at 285hp. It includes: GT-40 heads, E-303 cam, GT40 lower and upper intake, 65mm TB, 75mm MAF, 24lb injectors, and a different computer.

The reason why the Cobra has 40hp less than it should? The computer is detuned and automatically retards timing in the upper RPMs. Go figure.

Anotehr strange fact.... Ford rates the same kit but for 87-93 at 260hp.... a 20hp difference.... weird.

I would guess 280 hp.

You've sparked my interest...

I talked to my brother today (the primary driver of the Cobra) and he said he didnt think anyone was still racing after school? Either way, I'll just give you a call when I get home. Take it easy.

Jason
