I'm not sure - need advice.
 

Well, I just got my motor torn apart, removed the heads and lifters, hoping to find out what was causing a knock. I found two lifters that I can push down with my fingers - all the rest I can't do that to so would I be right in saying that those 2 lifters are junk?

I also found - when turning the motor over by hand while the heads and lifters were off - every time a piston came to the top of its stroke it seemed like on its way down I could hear a small, quiet little 'clunk'.

I'm not sure if this is normal as it only does it when the piston is at the top - and then as soon as it starts its way down - I hear it, but after that - the rest of the way down is smooth and I hear nothing. Is there supposed to be some play in there at all? I'm not sure but I really need to find out what is going on.

Me and my dad just tore apart this old gmc truck i used to have (now my cousins) and we put a small block 400 in it, but the original 305, we took it apart b/c it ws making a clunking noise, it had spun quite a few rods and wore the crank out so bad the pistons were slapping the heads. I hope yours isnt that bad. You said it did this after removing the heads ,sounds like your going to have to take the short block apart to inspect it.

well the motor only has about 3K on it, the motor was making a knocking noise when it was together , i found 2 bad lifters , the noise would go away a little when the motor warmed up , but i just dont know what to do next?

is it just a ticking noise? might have just been the lifters, what kind of lifters do you have? if those 2 are bad, replace them and gt them all adjusted correctly and see if that helps, the clicking noise your tlaking about when manualy turning the engine over w/o the heads and lifters, i think that is normal

no the pistons shouldnt have any play in them

i'm betting theres some play between the rod and the crank, spun bearing maybe

since you have the motor out, pull the oil pan, then take off the rod caps and inspect the bearings. Check the main bearings as well.

well i dont have the motor out, just torn down i have cam to the conclusion that there is supposed to be alittle movment form side to side( maybe 3 **** hairs at the most) and there is supposed to be piston to cyl clearince and that the rings take up for the slack. so i guess i am ok. thanks alot fellas

That logic works if the "clunk" happens in every cylinder evertime a piston heads down. Even then, it shouldn't. You have described a classic rod bearing failure, and you must pull the caps and check the bearings.

it does do this on every piston, I would love to pull the motor but i dont think the rafters in my garge will support the weight, does not look to sturdy. and my garge is to small to put a picker in it, i guess i will try to figure something out!
