Is a 5.0 really a 4.9litre?

thats what these guys are trying to tell me, Maybe it is? someone???

Chevyguy 01-25-2002 06:50 PM

Exactly 4.942222 Liters assuming exactly 4" bore and 3" stroke, or 301.592895 Cubic Inches, 302 just sounds better huh

Coupe5oh 01-25-2002 06:52 PM

Yea, and 5.0 sounds cooler than 4.9

Unit 5302 01-25-2002 07:39 PM

They call it the 5.0 to avoid confusion with the 4.9L 300ci I-6 engine.

Also, the final nail in the coffin (and a good thing it was nailed) was that the 5.0 badges were cheaper to make than 4.9. Something about a 9 being more difficult to cast and taking more plastic. Just think, that extra dollar or two of savings was passed directly onto the dealer.

Not a perfect 5.0

Coupe5oh:

Most auto manufacturers round actual engine sizes up or down a bit for simplicity or, in the case of the 5.0, for better marketing value. No big deal.
