ring and pinion install
Do you need special tools or dials to install ring and pinion gears? Can you install them with normal shop tools ( I work at Firestone where we don't do gear changes)

I know you have to measure the proper amount of backlash and get the ring and pinion mesh correct. I doubt very much a place like Firestone has the proper tools to do the job.
It is not a job for the average person to do. You are better off taking it to a place that does that and has people there that have done it before and know how to do it. I am not saying YOU COULDN'T do it but I am just telling you what I was always told. It's a job better left for the pros. ------------------ '82 GT 351W,BBK shorties, Comp Cam,edelbrock intake 625 cfm carter carb. c-4 tranny w/ pro stick shifter. 4 core radiator Mallory distributor. 3:27 ......................... |
You can do it if you have access to the following tools, A dial indicator with magnetic base (for measuring the backlash),a pinion depth gauge (I bought mine from tommy johnson motorsports $100) and a torque wrench that measures in inch pounds as low as 0 to 20. However this is not something for the weak at heart!

its a cock x2 plus I got into mine and found out that someone had already been in there screwing around. They hadn't even bothered with the preload so while driving, sometimes the carrier housing was turning with the axles. Thats not good. Do it right
