extended life coolant
I've put new hoses and a 3 core in my '87, and want to put extended life coolant in it. Have two other newer vehicles that use it, and would rather not have two kinds around.
I was cautioned by two people, that I shouldn't put it in a car that had regular ethlyn glycol in it before. I called Havoline and they said no-problem. (what else would I expect them to say) Anyone have any expereince with this? The reason I was given 'not to', was that it caused blown head gaskets ????? |
There is no reason NOT to run the extended stuff, just dont run it straight.

Just an FYI: the extended life antifreeze is silicate and phosphate free. Do what you want with that information, but from my experience (almost 4 years at a parts store), sometimes it can mean an early water pump death. Just make sure you thoroughly flush out all of the old stuff before putting in the orange, if you decide to.

From what I understand there is no reason to run extended life coolant in ANY car. It has a reputation for eating silicone. Is changing antifreeze really that big of a task every couple years?

Not a big task, I generally do a complete flush annually anyways, on anything I own.
Just hate to have to many jugs around <g> Between Prestone, extended life, and red pop for the outboards and summer cottage winterizing, to many kinds to worry about someone else picking up the wrong ones. The wife actually wants me to switch all the vehicles to Seirra, but I'm resistant to that. A couple of months ago, I had to flush the 87 venture van, because one of the kids here, put a 1/2 gal of reg. Prestone in it. Rather have one kind. |
