T-5 grinding into second
I get the grind into second only on fast shifts and it is becomeing more and more frequent. I heard once that it was the sinkcros(sp)can anyone conferm this or tell me how to spell it for that matter.
Is this something I could fix or do I need to take it to someone? How much am I looking to drop now? Thanks for the help Chip |
It could be the syncros, which would necessitate a rebuild, but a clutch cable out of adjustment can do the same thing you're describing too.

Sounds pretty textbook to me. My vote is it's the synchros.

Welcome to the club Chip!! I have the same thing going on with my '88GT. Since the T-5 is notorious for synchros going bad then I would say that's the problem. The only way you are going to be able to adjust your clutch is if you have an adjustable clutch quadrant set up.
My advice is to save the cash and install a TKO T-5 tranny and don't bother with a stock tranny anymore. You could still sell your old tranny for a few bucks towards the new one. I am sure someone would pick take it off your hands if the price was right. That's just my opinion though. That's what I am going to do. |
Had the same problem, my vote goes toward the synchros. You'll need to have it rebuilt or replaced. If you have the money a TKO or even a T56 would be great, but there are many guys running pretty good power with the stock T5.

First off, do you really have a supercharger on there like your sig. is hinting at? If not get a Super Duty T-5Z tranny, $999-1100. If you switch to a Tremec your looking at $2000+,and a T56 swap $3000+. it all depends on what you want to do with your car. If you have the extra cash, and you do have a supercharger, get a TKO II.

I do have the Supercharger but I don't have the cash. I am still running stock heads and intake. Although I do have a ported Cobra intake sitting by my feet I am waiting for some more cash so I can get heads before I do the install. Been waiting for a while. Seem like things are always messing up on this car that cost me money that dont make me go faster. How much am I looking at spending to get it fixed and how long till it takes another dump?

What kind of supercharger do you have? I'd say if your running 9psi, YOU NEED HEADS, AND INTAKE. A good head combo, would be worth 100+ hp. If your planning on racing alot, and driving it hard with 9psi, get a TKO II, yeah it'll hurt your wallet now at around $2500+ wth everything said and done, but do you want to chance it and grenade 1,2, even 3 more T-5's. or if your on a budget get a Super duty T-5, from jegs, summit, d&d expect to pay around 1000-$1100. Tell us your plans for the car.
They seem to have pretty good prices. Their TKO II is $1899. But that is the cheapest around it looks like. They had an add in MM&FF for rebuilt T-5's upgraded to T-5z's for like $700-800, might be worth a look. Again, if you tellus your plans for the car, we can easily steer you in the right direction. www.ddperformance.com |
I had the same problem with my t-5 and it wasn't the synchro's it was the shift fork. It had worn to a point that it wouldn't push second gear into place all the way so it would grind or even pop out while driving. I would recommend going to a good tranny shop and have them take a look before spending a heap of money on a new tranny. It cost me $400 bucks and haven't had a problem since. Good Luck!!

Its a 6 lbs PowerDyne that I got the smaller pullie for so it puts out 9 psi now. I dont think I am going to see too much track time for now because I dont really like the look of a roll bar and once you pass 13.99 in a vert you need one at Morroso. Plus its over 2 hours away. I am just looking to have a pretty dam fast street car that I can have some fun with. Right now I dont have too much extra cash flow so I will need to rebuild my t-5.
|
Have it rebuilt to T-5z specs and you should be ok, just as long as you don't beat on it everyday hardcore, and launch on slicks all the time. Around 100k the synchro's tend to go out on the stock T-5's.

T-5
I would go with the syncro's

T-5 Problem
More of a follow up question than a reply, so I apologise in advance. Can anyone help me with the following.
I have a '90 GT that runs a somewhat respectable 13.7 sec quarter with myself at the wheel. However recently I have noticed a harmonic vibration in 1st, 3rd and to a much lesser extent 5th gears, which seems to be in the tranny, i.e. clutch in or out makes little difference. The vibration is centered on the passenger side dashboard, if that helps, and disappears as soon as the shifter reaches neutral. The vibration peaks at about 3500 rpm, so if I am racing it seems to be absent. It is also worse in 1st than in 3rd. Thanks, Ian. |
Sounds like your driveshaft, and maybe even your tires being out of balance.
