AC Compressor Question
 

Hi, i need to change my A/C compressor because it started making funny noises and it would not cool the car. My questions are these., Is it hard to do? Any special tools needed? And when i buy it, do i need to just buy the compressor, or is it the compressor with clutch? Any help will be much appreciated.

No special tools to "physically" remove it, but you may wish to have the system professionally evacuated (or dump the freon into the atmosphere)...:mad:

p.s. If you want a fine working compressor, buy mine! I just pulled it off, with 32K original miles on it, and sincec I rarely use it, I am just pulling it off. :D

I'd take drudis up on his offer, those things are pretty expensive when buying new.

When mine finally kicks the bucket, I'm ditching it for an A/C delete kit. I'll give up the extra few pounds and ponies for now

Actually i found it at a local autoparts with a one year warranty for $129.00, I don't think it's a bad buy considering the warranty.

How many ponies are we talking about if i delete the A/C? Will it be a noticable difference? I am pretty much stock except for the flowmasters.

Its not so much the ponies, its the weight and hoses...

Sure, you might save 1hp, undoing that extra pulley. THe A/C get automatically shut down on full throttle (not like you should have it on at the track anyways). The biggest thing, is getting rid of the extra weight off the nose of your car. THATS what I was after.

You will need a license or permit to buy R-12 freon. It is federaly regulated. So if you unscrew your lines you will have to pay someone to refill it. Its not that cheap either. Also, if you take it to a shop to have it refilled and they are obligated to leak test it. If it has leaks they by law have to take the freon out untill you get the leaks fixed. Now you are getting into some money especially if the evaporator is leaking? Keep this in mind!

Also, you will need a set of guages to put in the freon and a good vacuum pump to suck the lines before you fill them up. I believe some autopart stores will rent or loan some of these items. Maybe even a springlock remover, I can't remember if older stangs have those?

If your compressor is making noise your oil may have leaked out of the compressor. You might be able to add more oil to your exhisting compressor???

My advise is to check your lines for leaks if the hose is leaking replace the hose and put your new compressor on. Have it refilled professionally.

One more thing you should also flush the lines change the orface tube and accumulator while you are in there if you can. So you will not have to go thru this mess again and you A/C will work great.
