Best stroker kit for a 92 302ci
What would be the best stroker kit if i wanted add a blower and nitrous to it later?
|
I think it would depend on what you're using it for. If your car is a daily driver I wouldn't stroke it to more than a 331. If you don't drive it much go with the 347. The stroke on a 347 is pretty long and wears prematurely. You'll also have to notch the bottom of the cylinders so the rods can clear. They're pretty much a race engine. The stroke on a 331 is shorter, and although it still wears quicker than a 302 it will last longer than a 347.
It may be easier and cheaper to install a 351 Windsor and go from there. |
Like ponycar says depends on what your looking for and what you use the car for, he has good advice. From all my research the 347 to me sounds like a throw away, beat the crap out of it til it breaks and it's time for a new motor. Me, I was thinking along the same lines but have recently decided when I go with a rebuild it will be to a 306, still leaves alot of room later if I want to stroke it out and I figure I'll be making all the power I'll want with my street/strip car. Just my .02

Here we go again:o The only real advantage of a 331 over a 347 is that you do not have to notch the cilinder walls for the 331. Both the 331 and 347 will have the same life span, and oil control issues if machined and put together right. Maybe I'm just lucky:rolleyes: I drive my car like I stole it and is uses no oil or there is no premature cilinder wall ware from the so called bad rod ratio.

I am going to use this car for my daily driver, taking it to the track once in a while. I defintly want to get as much life as i can with the engine. As mentioned before, what does it take to convert a 302 over to a 351 windsor? New computers and pulution controls? What will be the aprox. cost?
|
why not a 317 and rev it to 8000:D :D
|
whitchh 317 kit are you talking about?
|
i wanna say i saw a sweet coast high kit but it could of been someone else

A 454, 455, and 502 have worse R/S ratios IMO its a moot point in the general sense.
If your building a super-charged engine with nitrous, why even worry about a stroker? your only gaining a measly 43 cubes with a stock bore. (not knocking a 347, I'm building one myself). If'n I wuz U, I would check out a niv\ce siamese bore block that could take a healthy over-bore. A 4.125 bore and a 3.00 stroke gives you 320 cubes. I think a blower/nitrous car would benefit more from the unshrouding than increasing the stroke? Stuff it with a stock length rod and a beefy custom reverse dome piston with a nice thick crown. |
Well...actually, I have read several articles in mm&ff and 5.0 mustang, as well as have talked to Tom, head of D.S.S. racing. They all say the 347 has oil problems, premature wear, etc. However, all articles that I have read say that the 331 stroker is a good engine that you can put high miles on. I talked to Tom @ DSS before I ordered my 331, which is being built now, and he said that the 331 and the 306 use the same ring package, so you don't really have to worry about premature wear and b/c of that and the fact that it uses a shorter rod ratio than a 347, you can put high miles on it and it will be a dependable motor for a daily driver. just passing on info....josh

Before the 331 came out were the oil control issues and short life span of the 347 a problem, or did they just start after the birth of the 331? Did these shops tell people about the so called problems? Why is it that GM can make motors for years that last for 200,000 miles with the same issues as the 347 but not have any problems? I am not saying that I know more then all the big name shops. But I do know that all the talk about bad rod ratios and oil control issues that are being told started by the makers of the 331. |
I drove the hell out of my 347 when my car was running(tore it down to upgrade some parts). I had about 3000 miles on it and had absolutly no oil problems..
|
The oil control issue with most 347 kits, as i am told, comes from the fact that the wrist pin intersects the rings. Coast High Performance has a 347 kit that they have supposedly fixed that problem with. I would very much like to hear from som of the owners of those kits to see what they think. I am going to buy the cost high kit and use some gapless rings and pe o get 75,000+ miles:D
