T5 vs....
I was wondering if anyone knows what the Z spec T5 is? Whats different about those than the regular T5?
Phantom ------------------ 1983 GLX Convertible 5-Speed, knife-edged crank, internally balanced, TRW 11:1, custom cam, ported Windsor Jrs, Manley Valves, CCs roller lifters, dual springs, ARP stud kit, 600cfm Edelbrock Torker 2, Mallory Ignition, Canton 7qt traps windage tray baffles, Hooker Super Comp Headers 1 5/8 primaries 3" collectors, Flowmasters, K&N, ASP puleys, Maximum Motorsports C/Cs strut tower K member brace, through floor subframes, Grant wheel, billet pedals, 93 seats, Keystone rims |
2.95 first gear is about it. The regular T5 is 3.35. That's what accounts for the increased torque capability. Keep in mind though that the 2.95 first gear will make a 4.10 rear gear feel/act like a 3.60 rear gear.

Does the T5 have a higher torque rating or does the T5Z have the higher rating? Also does the T5Z have a different overdrive ratio?

The Z has the higher rating, though the only gearing difference is 1st methinks.

T5Z ratios are 2.95/1.94/1.34/1.00/0.63
Stock T5 are 3.35/1.93/1.29/1.00/0.68 1993 & Up T5 (Cobra) 3.35/1.99/1.33/1.00/0.68 At least that's what I've got written down. T5Z has the higher torque rating. ------------------ Jeff Chambers Trophy Stock #3 11.86 Seconds / 113.8 MPH Chambers Racing Team |
There are 4 or 5 different parts in the T-5Z.

Thanks for all the help guys! Can the stock T5 be upgraded to a T5Z? How could I get a T5Z, I don't see them sold many places, if any at all?

Alot of places sell the Z code tranny; D&D, Hanlon, FordSpeed and Steeda to name a few. They're currently running in the $1000 to $1100 range the last time I checked. You can also order it directly from your Ford dealer as part number M-7003-Z. You can upgrade (if that's what you want to call it) your regular T5 to Z code specs, but it requires the cluster PLUS all the I/O gears...not an inexpensive undertaking. If I had to take a guess, I'd bet that the changeover would cost upwards of $800 just in hard parts alone. That's only a few hundred less than a brand new one.

I was gonna have mine rebuilt to z specs, but it is not worth it. You could replace the 4 or 5 stock parts with the z-spec parts but that wouldn't be smart. just get a new one......jegs has them for $1,099.
