How to prep paint for decals/emblems?!
 

1) My car is a 1991 red (original paint) 5.0. I'm removing the factory-glued-on"5.0" emblems from my front fenders and replacing them with new stick-on "302" emblems. I have them off but some old factory glue is still on the paint. How should I safely remove the old glue and prep the surface for the new emblems?

2) I'm also adding two small white "302" decals to both sides of the small factory hood cowl (painted surface). How should I prep the surface for the decals, and how about after they're on?

PS- It might be worthwhile to add that my car will still have about a 2-3 week old coat of wax on it when I add the emblems and decals.

On the factory glue, all I can say is grab a bucket of hot water, soap, and a sponge. Rub. Rub long time. Then wash your car, go ahead and do the whole thing, it needs it. Before you apply the decals/emblems, MY suggestion would be to clean that specific area with alcohol (isopropyl, not the tasty kind, though in a pinch you could probably use some high proof clean stuff like good vodka.....). Let the alcohol evaporate, then apply!

WD-40 will remove the glue. Then clean that up with some simple green. Then clean that up with some alcohol for the final preperation. Wild Turkey would be my choice, but I'm kinda guessing that would leave a residue =)

if your wax job has silicone in it you should use methyl hydrate(gas line antifreeze) it removes wax and silicones , your decals should stick like glue then.(ps. this is from an automotive painter)

When I removed mine to replace them with newer ones, I used adhesive remover. It came right off. Though I'm sure all the above suggestions would suit you better if you happen to have those chemicals lying around. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

There's a product called "Goof Off" that I used to remove the stickum left behind from the body side molding on my T-bird. I came off with little effort and did not harm the paint. Available @ most hardware stores in the paint section . Hope this helps.
