Cam vs. gear
I'm not building my engine for a while but it eats at me every day thinking about it. I want a cam that thumps the ground but is still driveable down to 1700 RPM's or so. It WON'T be my daily driver so mileage won't be a BIG concern. I want it to be mean as hell on the street, so 3.73 or 4.10, and what kind of cam? (heads/intake will be ported edelbrocks)

I've heard a great camshaft for the street is a comp cams 280H cam. I think it has 280/280 total duration, 230/230* duration at .050" of lift and .512" total lift. I heard it's kind of a lopey cam, but has a huge power band and very strong all around power with great top end up to 6000rpm. You may want to change your intake manifold to a performer RPM if you get this cam to optimize it. This cam is the closest to a all out performance cam you can easily use on the street, so it is a VERY MEAN street cam. I don't know if you have true dual exhaust either, but that makes a HUGE difference as well. If you want to keep the performer manifold and the performer heads (i assume they're both just the performer and not performer RPM) maybe a comp cams 270H would be a better match for your car's combination and it would still be a good step up from your cars 260/270 (stock) duration cam because it has more intake duration and a bit more lift. Good luck.

I have a comp cams xe274h-10. It's advanced 2 degrees. It pulls great from 2000 to 6000. It's 274/286 and 523/523 lift. I have used this cam with a 3600lb AOD to a 3200lb SROD(stick) and a tremec after that and it has worked well in all aplications. I also have Lt headers and a performer RPM intake with 600 cfm.
That cam killed my old Crane 272/272 and 484/484 in low and high end. Comp makes a good cam. BTW it has a great exhaust tone. ------------------ 82 Mercury Capri 302. Comp. Cams Tremec 3550 3.73's 12.8@106 N/AKevin's Capri |
Hey kevin, your car looks wicked. I was wondering about some places to mount gauges in mine, and i got some excellent ideas from the inside shot of your car. That display center in the center console is something i don't exactly find vital to the function of my vehicle.
