Engine swap?
i have a 67 coupe that im looking to switch motors in...it has a 289 2v with a 3 speed in it right now gets terrible gas mileage hard to start on cold days and not much power...i was thinking about switching to a fuel injected 5.0 out of a newer Gt up to 93...and use the t5 tranny out of it as well...im just trying to get some opinions if this is a good idea? or if it is too much trouble etc. any suggestions would be appreciated (even other setup ideas would be appreciated)

I am not sure if the swap is posible I am sure it is if you have alot of money.
but just to let you know are you wanting to do this cause you want better gas milage or for more power. your 289 would put out just as much if not more power then A 5.0 if it was rebuilt. and your engine just might be getting bad gas milage cause it needs work. like A rebuild or somthing ells. could be a number of things. I think the stock 2v 289 were supposed to get around 18 miles per gallon. as long as you know that and still want to swap engine then go for it. I would even do the t5 trans no matter what engine you go with. well sorry I couldn't help you with the swap. ford kid |
This is a popular swap. Check out the articles in MUSTANG AND FORDS as they have had several. Many after market kits are available as well. Do an internet search to find kits. Sorry that I can't come up with the exact names of companies off the top of my head. Do the search.

Coast High Performance might be one.

Mustangs Plus also has kits for doing this swap for either the c-4 housing or t-5 housing. Their website is www.mustangsplus.com They should have their number on the site, just call them and ask for a catalog, they're free. They are big on restomods, so you'll get lots of ideas on what you can do with your stang by going through their catalog. National Parts Depot (NPD) also has some conversion kits for T-5s and AOD tranny's. And Rev is right on the money about 5.0 conversions, they are dime a dozen.

Man, when i read your thread its like i thought we were twins. I started out with the exact same situation as you. I bought a 67 coupe with a 289 2v and a manual 3 speed when i was 17. it was completely bone stock. it didn't have much power, it gets terrible gas mileage (about 12, i think), and i still have trouble starting it on cold days. 3 years later about half the car has been left stock and i'm $10,000 deep. my 3 spd is dying as we speak and i'm told it only has a few months left before it totally dies. i agree with the fordkid, if you want power the 5.0 isn't worth the swap, but you can't beat the increased gas mileage. personally i am in the middle of building a 347 stroker to drop in my car, cuz you can find a 302 block almost anywhere and then you just need to stroke it out and the 289 and 302 are completely compatible so the swap is no problem. but first i need to take that archaic 3 spd out as well as the stock rear end. hope that helps.
