Slick/Drag Radial Questions

Hello,

Looking to get some slicks or drag radials. Preferably I would like something that is streetable with a life of 15-20k miles. Either way, I want to fit the largest possible tires without having to change anything to my car. If I just got some dr's, could I get something to fit on my stock 15" rims?

So basically it comes down to, I want to the best tires possible for the least amount of hassle/cash...but who doesn't? :)

Thanks,
DoranW

There is no way you'll get 15-20k with slicks on the street.....lol. Maybe a few hundred, if your lucky. Drag radials you'll see probaly around 10k. Just get some good street tires 245's+ and you'll hook alot better than you do now, and they will last alot longer than slicks or drag radials. Looking at your sig. I thing some wide street tires would suit you just fine.

McCreary G60's. I've ran several sets and gotten a little over 15,000 miles out of each set. Cost, depending on where you get them is $90-$100 each. They do great in the rain and need very little heating at the track to get them to hook.

How wide are they? Hmm...Why are they so cheap? is it just because they don't last for a long time? My Michelin Pilots were like 135 each from Costco and I have heard of them going for much more. When you say 'They do great in the rain...' is that great for a DR or just great for any tire? If they are that good, and they cost that much, then those would probably be a good option for me (assuming they fit on the stock LX rims...:))

I went to nitto's web site and asked them about the 555R drag radial tire. They e-mailed me back and claim 10-15K from these tires. They also told me that the side wall is stiff enough to use in autocross. Has any one ever used these tires bofore. I would like to know if they work as good as nitto claims.

I got the BFG's and don't believe their sizes. Add about a half of an inch to the width. I ordered the 10 in. street slicks from Summit and they are 10.5 mounted. I have the lip removed on the rear fenders and they still rub going around corners. I made a change to the shocks going from Lakewood Drag shocks to some Koni's and the rubbing decreased a little. Just a warning. I'd take 1BAD89's advice if I were you. Good luck.

I'll second the mccreary tires, i just do a short second gear burnout and have got 60' time of 1.89. haven't driven them in the rain yet. I drive to the track and air them down to about 15-17 psi and go at it thern drive home, they don't handle as good as a radial but hook good and are cheap. they are a dirt track tire that is cheap and works good. i have mine mounted on a set of turbines and they measure just over 26" tall and between 8.5-9" of tread on the ground, no rubbing at all.

Compared to the MT ET streets and being that they aren't a radial, they have a decent tread patten to get you around in the rain. Unlike the MT's, I wouldn't leave the driveway if it were raining with those tires on my car, with the McCreary's, I wouldn't give it a second thought. As LX Mike stated, they were intended for small dirt track racing for guys on a real tight budget, that's why they are so cheap. He also gave you the dimensions on them, so I want repeat that info. They will fit under your car with no problem on your 15" rims.

I haven't had any problems with my Nittos, they handle fine in the rain, too. Don't know a thing about the McCrearys.

I HIGHLY suggest Nitto DR's. I got over 75 passes and 10K miles on my first set. I've managed a best 60' of 1.76 with my 100% stock suspension, save for GW subframe connectors and 4 point car bar. Normally my 60's are in the 1.83-1.85 range. They are the BEST damp road tire I have ever owned. In the deep water, they can be a little squirrly, but if the roads are just a little wet, my rear will push my front tires before they give up traction. I run them with 25lb on the street, and 16-18lbs at the track. I do about 5-8 second burnout depending on temps outside, and launch at between 2500-3500 depending on track conditions. I will NEVER own another tire besides these for my car. They are around $125 each for my size of 245-50-16.

I've also got a set of Nitto's and I'm undecided about them.

They'll hook good if you burn the crap out of them, but if not, they are just as bad as a street tire, or worse.

Also, he said he wants tires for his stock 15" wheels which are only 7" wide. The only 15" Nitto's to choose from are like 205/60 or 275/50's. Neither would work for him. 205s are way too small, and the 275's are too big for a 7" wheel, not to mention removing the quad shocks and rolling the fender lip in.

Another thing is that the Nitto's are awesome in the rain until they start losing what little tread they had in the first place. Mine are down to the wear bars and its pretty scary to drive in the rain for me. I almost lost it just barely giving it gas in 4th gear last week, no fun.

These McCreary's sound like something I'd be interested in soon, because my Nitto's are about shot and I wont have over $300 just for 2 tires.
Wheres a good place to get them?

Powered By Ford (they have an add in MM&FF) sells them. I also did a search on the net a while back and came up with several more places, although I didn't write them down. I get mine locally because we have a small local dirt track.
