How to identify a motor?

I realize this will make me sound like a real novice that's in over his head, but that would be a pretty good description. I just bought a '65 Ford Fairlane 500 in rough shape to restore for $800. Supposedly, the motor is 302 out of a '69 Mustang. How can I confirm this? Where do I look for VIN numbers or whatever? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are some numbers at the back of the block near the starter. You will probably need to pull the starter to read the numbers.

On my 68 mustang I had to remove the starter to see the numbers. The numbers on my block are (D4DE-6015-BA). I'm told the D4 stands for 1974, If it was C8 it would be a 1968.
