Mobil 1, good for 6k miles?
 

I went to Mobil for an oil change and got the Mobil 1 oil. The guy at the shop told me that I won't have to change the oil for 6,000 miles. He claims that's "how much better the mobil 1 is".

Now, to me, this sounds like BS. I've always changed my oil every 3,000, like I always been told. Is the Mobil 1 really that good?

I'd like to know why they claim Mobil 1 is so much better than other synthetic oils. I'm not sold.

Mobil 1 won't breakdown as quickly as a conventional oil, and may actually provide 12,000 miles of great service, or more. Problem is, it still get's dirty, and it still should be changed. I change my oil and filter every 3k miles, and I use Mobil 1. Truth be told, it looks nearly as good coming out as it did going in, but I still change it every 3k.

You've just explained not only the value of synthetic oil but why I don't use it in my daily drivers but would in a race car or very high-performance, low-mileage street car.
It lubicates better than conventional oil but with the problem that it still get dirty.

I find that changing my conventional oil (and filter) every 2,000 miles for the past 12 years and 115,000 miles on my '90 LX has kept it running beautifully with almost zero sludge build-up and no oil-related problems of any kind, including silent lifters and shiny heads (not even discolored) when I pulled the valve covers awhile back.

Would it be even better with synthetic oil? Probably a bit less wear from cold starts of course but other than that, not much. I save about $20. per oil change which comes out to over $1100. saved by using conventional oil vs synthetic oil over the mileage i have now. Worth it to me and frankly, I like having fresh oil in the crankcase every 2,000 miles. I couldn't force myself to leave synthetic oil in there for 10,000 miles or so.

Again; I would never recommend not using synthetic oil if you want to pay the price but on a daily driver I don't believe it's really necessary. Like my using Sunoco Ultra 94. It's a choice that we make with our money on our car...doesn't mean it's always the best thing to do for everybody.

I run mobil 1 in my car and like it alot. I change my oil every 3000 miles like everyone says. Synthetic oil probably will last 12000 miles like mentioned above but the filter is only good for about 3000. I would run synthetic oil in any car that is driven daily because it breaks down at a much highter temp than conventional oil. If something happens and your car overheats synthetic oil will protect the engine much better than conventional oil. Thats my 2 cents on the subject.

Has anyone seen that new product from Fram I think it was. You put it in place of your oil drain plug. No more messy spills or tools to change your oil they say. It looks kinda niffty.

Good to know. Thanks for the info. I thought 6,000 may be a bit long to go w/o a change. Sounds like something you CAN do, but might not be the best idea.

I wouldn't feel safe leaving ANY oil in for 10,000 miles! I'd rather use the cheap stuff and replace it every 2,000 miles, like Mr. 50 said. I like the idea of fresh oil in the crank case, also.

Do you think the metal shavings in the oil could present a problem, in the long run, if you leave the oil in for 10,000 miles?

I think I'm going to stay with the Mobil 1, and change it every 3000 or 4000 miles. It may cost more, but it makes me feel better and should help the engine life.

Not if you invest in a magnetic drain plug, as I did. $3.00 at any auto parts store.

I usually agree with everything MR 50 says. However, I think I save money by using synthetic oil. I usually look for the 5 Quart jug in the clearance aisle, but even a sale will get you one for around $18. That's $3.60 a quart. Maybe 3 times as expensive as inferior oil. So if I leave it in 3 times as long or more I save money. That is exactly what I do. One year or 12000 miles whichever comes first.

My family uses organic oil in all our vehicles....but the only real high performance car around is my Mustang. I use organic oil...usually 40 weight because my engine runs a little on the hot side...I change it every 1000-1500 miles along with a filter... I love to keep it fresh...:rolleyes: :D
