PS-92 ignition coil
 

Anyone know if a Crane PS-92 ignition coil can be put on a 5.0 with no other ignition mods? I just picked one up cheap, but I'm not sure if it isn't a little too much (if that's even possible). I've recently been informed the PS-91 would have been a better choice and the PS-92 is more of a "race only" coil.

Could installing this coil hurt anything?

Chris, I spoke with Crane this morning and they said that coil was indeed too much. It's designed for a capacitive ignition (I have no clue what I'm typing) and if I install it I will/may kill my ignition.

I have so much respect for your advice that if you really think it will be OK, I'll throw it on. What do you think?

Thanks Moc. Are you running any other aftermarket ingition pieces? Does the coild have a red bracket? Mine says for use with CD ignitions only.

I have the Crane 'Fireball' PS-91 coil and not only is it a drop-in piece, it's a much hotter spark than the stocker with no negative effects. My plugs are cleaner than ever with no problems on an otherwise stock ignition.

The PS-92 has about 20% more power and shouldn't hurt anything. Go for it.

Thanks Mr 5.0. It looks like the link you attached was for the LX series of Crane ignitions. Is the LX-92 the same as the PS-92?

Sorry to keep driving this, but I really don't want to f. things up.

I've scoured Cranes site for a few days now and this page seems to be about the most informative on the PS series. Except for mine isn't the Fireball. It has a red (as opposed to black) case. I'm wondering if Crane terms everything as Fireball now. This coil I have may be a few years old, but never used.

I have my factory cover (plastic shield over it) but yes it does,and yes my copper autolites stay very clean...i have MSD copper rotor & cap. igot rid of there plug wires ,and motorcraft 9 mm blue to.. these cars run best with the factory 8 mm gray wires trustme ;)

You can experiment going a little wider than the stock gap (.054).
I use a .060 gap on my Autolites and it works fine.

Sorry, I've been away from the Mac for a week. To put your mind at ease, your factory ignition should be CD (Capacitive Discharge), so you won't have anything to worry about. Jim's suggestion of gapping at .060" is a good one.
