5.4 vs. 4.6

anyone made the swap? i was thinking about saving some money on the Cobra type R and just dropping a 5.4 in myself. any help would be appreciated.

The supply of DOHC 5.4's isn't exactly overflowing. You might be able to get one out of a Navigator, but I doubt it would fit reasonably into the standard Mustang engine compartment.

that was my plan exactly. alot of dealerships have people that blow up their navigator motors and then the dealer fixes them, but rather than put the motor back into the navigator, the dealer puts a new motor in. i was planning on getting one like that. but, i also know of a shop that can easily get ahold of one. thanks for the insight

Have fun trying to fit it in. Not much room.

vtec8ter 04-05-2002 09:50 AM

yeah. it is a close fit, but it works in 96-98 cobras. it just sits a little lower and i need a R hood to fit the power pipe. i am pretty sure that it will work then

mustangman65_79 04-05-2002 09:59 AM

well, then that sounds like a plan. Let us all know what happends.

i will let you know. just another ? for you, i see you are in the military. i am going to the naval academy.... do you find alot of people around the bases or in the military in general that have a fast cars and like to race?

DRASTiK 04-05-2002 12:33 PM

Not too sure about the Air Force, but I know we Marines and the Sailors that are around us always like to have a good time with our cars. Think about it, many of the military are young, single men with no bills and cash to burn. I however am not in that category anymore.

vtec8ter 04-05-2002 01:19 PM

yeah. i dont know about these bases on the east coast. there are alot of imports and slower cars..... maybe an older supra or something every once in a while, but i have only seen navy and one or two other bases. thanks for the info. semper fi

In last month's Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords they shoehorned a new Lightning 5.4 into an '86 stang. It fits, it's just a little tall but mainly because of the roots blower.

PGkelly 04-05-2002 08:09 PM

i was glancing through a dealer catalog a while back (july i think), they had five DOHC 5.4's and a bunch of DOHC 4.6's, so they can be found.

mustangman65_79 04-05-2002 09:25 PM

Yes, there is all kinds of ppl here who like to race. I'm in cali, so there is a big # in imports and mustangs. Now everyone know that there is no such thing as a fast import, but there are a few quick ones here. But only one I've raced so far that can even take my wounded cam, 2bbl 289.

vtec8ter 04-06-2002 11:22 AM

thanks for all the info. mustang man you gotta come to the east coast sometime. md-dc-va area. i will show you some fast imports. some 10.40 supras and stuff like that. you know??? oh, and a little advice when you come, never race one on the highway with a wounded cam.... they got a little too much top end with that twin turbo.
