My AOD is locked up
I pulld my engine and transmission. When I pulled it out all the fluid came out. I put everything back together. I can hardly turn the engine. It feels like the trans is engaged. I put fluid in the trans but it doesn't help. The trans was completely drained of fluid, including the torque converter. I cannot start the engine because the starter can bearly turn it over. What do I need to do?
Oh yeah, I busted the neutral safety switch also. Please Help!! |
Did you separate the trans from the engine once out of the car? I'm assuming you did and put the converter back on wrong, not all the way onto the input shaft. If the converter is not all the way on the input shaft the trans won't turn when you try to turn over the engine, thus making you think the trans locked up. separate the trans from the engine and make sure the converter is in place correctly. slide the converter on the input shaft, then lift, turn, and push the converter clockwise by the knob on the back of the converter. This should seat the converter properly. There should be about and inch of space from the back of the converter to the end of the bellhouseing when installed properly.
Also one other note, this may not be relevant. This only applies if you dropped the motor in while the trans is still in the car. You CANNOT bolt the converter to the flywheel before dropping the motor in. You have to put the converter on the trans and line up the bolts to the flywheel when lowering the engine. Hope that helps you out! Craig |
When you pull the tranny out, take it to a transmission shop and get the pump checked out. If you didn't have the converter in all the way there is a possibility you may have damaged the pump when you bolted it all together.

That's got to be it. This is the first AOD I have owned. I will pull it apart when I get back. I am in Afghanistan. I will be coming home around the 15th of may and cannot wait to get my car on the road. Thanks for all the help! |
Just another side note
You should hear (or Feel) 3 distinct clicks as you slide the converter on. Best way to do it to spin it while you are pushing on it. The first 2 are not that bad but the last one can be a bear!
