ignitions and coils

Hi~

I have a 66 ( 289 ) mustang that Iam wanting to put a new igniton and coil in.

Can anyone recomend what a good combination would be?

It has a 4bbl carb - if that matters and performer rpm intake.

Thanks in advance!

All depends on your budget.

Low Budget: Pertronix Electronic Conversion and Blaster II coil (This is what I have and love it) ~ $110

Medium Budget: New aftermarket dist, Blaster II coil ~$300

Higher Budget: Aftermarket dist, MSD ignition with matching coil ~$500

I am running a modern distributor with magnetic pick up. Just use a 79 302 and that should be perfect. Cost for a rebuild is just 36.00 at your local part store. Go to eBay and get either a Hi 6 Crane box or an MSD 6A. Both work well. A suitable coil is required for the multiple spark ignitions. I am running a 358 Windsor with big aluminum heads, RPM intake and a 750 Holley and the thing idles like stock, comes out at part throttle like a stock ignition, and blasts low 12's in the quarter mile. Could you ask for MORE. Add Nitrous and you are high 11's.
Hope this helps. Email me at jim_howard_pdx@yahoo.com if you want more info. But this set up is HOT HOT HOT and runs so smooth. I love it. Can you tell.......

My advice is to get a MSD magnetic pick up distributor and an electronic (6AL?) box. Don't do what I did and get a Mallory Unillite. Actually the Mallory coil has been good. The Unilite sucks big time.

I have everything msd and love it. distibutor, coil blaster 2, 6a, and wires. I tried other products and they can't even come close to the msd set up.

I've heard bad things about MSD and fords. They don't go together. I'm going to go with Pertronix Electronic Conversion II. It has a new system with a built in chip. The chip is suposed to monitor the cars need for power, and it can up to double the spark. Also I'm going with the Flamethrower II 45,000 volt coil. Can u imigine nearly 100,000 volts for plug???

problems with msd and ford? like what? i dont see how its much different then a chevy. i have a standard distributor with the pertonix ignition system where it just replaces the points in your current distributor. also the the 6a box with the blaster 2 coil. never had a problem and man does that thing have some juice. i was messing around one day and i was seeing how big of a gap i could put on the pluts. opend the gap so far that the spark jumped from the electrode to the threads. it was still an unbelievably strong spark. flamethrower coils dont seem to come close. id try to get atleast the blaster 2 coil, if you dont like it then take it back and get the flamethrower... but im sure you will be more then satisfied. let me know what you decide to get

Hey, thanks 66StangGuy.

I've many a story about MSD, either not working right, or going out in only a year on older fords. Not sure about newer. For the price, A MSD unit should last more then one year. Almost everyone I talk to said they didn't like it on their mustangs.
