while my motor is out, should I change the torque converter?
Does havin the motor out make changing the torque converter easier? Is it a worthwile modification?
|
Absolutely. Swapping a higher stalling torque converter is one of the best mods that you can do to a stock AOD, and it typically yields from 3 to 5 tenths reduction in ET.
Price is going to be the main issue as good converters cost anywhere from $500-$700. Precision Industries, Lentech Automatics, and Performance Automatics all make good converters. I've got the PI 2800 and I love it. With the motor out, it does make swapping the converter much easier as it requires removing the transmission if the motor is in the car. With the motor out, all you have to do is pull the converter off the input shaft and install the new converter. You'll also need to replace the front main seal on the tranny which is no sweat at all. If you've got the cash...I'd HIGHLY recommend doing it. You'll not be sorry. --nathan |
