Gear Install Help Please????

I have a set of 4.10 gears and an install kit ready to go in the stang but I don't wannna screw it up. Heard too many horror stories!!I don't have the money to get someone to do it so what I need is some good instructions. Oh yeah, I am mechanically inclined, just haven't ever messed with the rearend. Appreciate any help.:)

Thanks James

Gears are somewhat challenging. I replaced mine myself with a friends assistance. Somewhere on a previous post, someone had given a link to an EXCELLENT instruction website for gear install. Try a search for it. If you can't find it, PM me.

Good luck man,
Rob

read please!!

90. make sure you get a good dial indicator!!! make sure you have a good magnetic base for it too! TAKE YOUR TIME!! i cant emphasize this enough. make sure your gear pattern is correct, toe and heel! will you be using air tools? will it be on a lift? if no to these questions, make sure the azz end is up high in the air you you have a strong but not too long breaker bar or 1/2' ratchet! you are going to need to crush the crush sleeve pretty good doing it by hand. you are going to need access to a press so you can put your bearing(s) on. rule of thumb. if you are pressing the bearings on, make sure you put the RACE on the bearing so it gives equal pressure to the bearing when you are pressing it on the pinion or differential. if not, you can distort the bearing cage and ruin the bearing itself!!

here you go:

gear install

GOOD LUCK AND BE PATIENT!

I've got a write-up on my site as well; its actually referenced in the Corral article. Getting the gears set up correctly takes practice and the right tools. At most shops, they're just going to pull the old ones out and slap the new ones in using the same pinion shim, so you might as well give it a go yourself. Just check backlash and the pattern when you're done to make sure that they're not too far out of wack.

Thanks alot guys, think I'll try it this weekend if I can set aside a good bit of time. A friend of mine has a dial indicator and air tools and he said he'd help me if I needed it so I guess here goes nothin.

Thanks James
