Pinion Depth ? (ford Gearset)
I NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE PINION DEPTH IS SUPPOSED TO BE WITH A FORD MOTORSPORT 3.73 GEAR. I BOUGHT THE GEAR USED AND DONT HAVE IT. BY PINION DEPTH I MEAN FROM THE CENTER OF THE RING GEAR TO THE FACE OF THE PINION GEAR. IF ANY0NE HAS ANY INPUT IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS

Tough to say. Other manufacturer's etch the pinion depth on the face of the pinion so that the depth can be set up precisely. Ford gears aren't etched since they expect the installer to reuse the original pinion shim; their manufacturing tolerances are close enough that this theoretically gets the pinion within its installation tolerances. If you're replacing non-Ford gears, or have swapped pinion shims somewhere along the way, you've upset their installation scheme. The best you'll be able to do is to set the gears up by pattern alone. Not an easy task to do and get it perfect.

I've found that what Jeff says is true. I used the same spacer and it works great. If you've had non-Ford gears in there, then I can probably tell you how to do it later tonight when I find an article on the subject. In the mean time, measure the head of the pinion gear. That measurement will be needed to calculate the pinion depth.

thanks ill try putting the gear in with the shims that were already in there and hope it all comes out ok, it is a ford gear so im hoping the original shim will work ok.
