How to dump slush box??
I have a 1998 GT auto, I NEED to get into driving a stick. I only got the car because it was cheap and NOT abused. How can I go from auto to stick cheap but the right way??
|
There isnt a cheap way you are going to spend $1200.00 at the minimum for the conversion, If I were you I would get a big tranny cooler a shift kit and a stall converter and leave it auto.

Thanks man,
Ive been asking around the office and the motorheads here have the same consensus. What do you recommend in names and prices for the parts youve mentioned? I've heard the name TransGo is the best name in shift kits. |
If you have a couple hundred $ 350 $450 call Lentech they will hook you up.!;)
|
Thanks to Dark_5.0 and geno5.0 for their help.
If we were meant to fly we'd have wings, Mustangs GT's are the next best thing!!!! |
Transgo is widely accepted as a good shift kit.

ON my 88GT it was an auto when we bought it and we did the famous swap. All used parts except clutch quadrant and cable. I did it myself and it wasn't that bad. SOoooooo, anyway, if your aod is having probs I still have the AOD out of the GT sitting in my garage, nothing wrong with it at all. drove it home when I bought it then pulled motor and tranny and all interior and started from scratch. Anyway I can sell it to you if you need it. Good luck either way.

USMC302-
I think I going to look into both options, but I'm leaning your way and replacing the tranny. I want the total feel that I used to have with my 89gt. I miss the solid chirp of 2nd and 3rd. I only got this car with AOD because it was $13,500 owned by an old man, with 8,000 miles. Thanks for your help, I will post the outcome soon!! |
usmc302's tranny is not he same exact thing you have in there now..you have a AODE and he has a AOD..yous is more electronic than his..not saying it wont work just saying its not the same thing
|
LXXL8R I didn't know that, not a big AOD fan, waht is the difference? And good choice DEVILS SON, I would go for the T5 too good luck.
|
I think I will go for the swap out, grin and bear it. I think it will be worth the effort. The AOD I believe uses vacume line to go into the OD gear. The AODE is electronicly controled. For me to install an AOD I would need to add a vacume line. Not totally sure but this is what I remember.

as far as i know, the SN95 swap is close to the same as the pre 93 T-5 swap.
If you buy a new transmission then yes you will spend well over $1000 to get it done, but if you buy a used tranny like I did then it wont be nearly as expensive. I bought everything used except for the clutch kit/cable and quadrant. And after selling my year old rebuilt AOD for $425, i ended up spending under $200 out of my pocket. Not bad for about a half second quicker at the track :) heres a good link about the swap http://members.aol.com/black306/AODT5.html |
looks like that site was moved, try this one instead

I cant thank you enough!!! I've been reading that article over and over, I'ts great!! That's a good cost out of pocket too. I am planning to do this with-in the next 6 weeks, whenever I get some time off and an extra set of hands. I really appreciate all the help everyone has givin!! Thanks again!

remember the 4.6 uses a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the windsors, so a tranny out of a windsor, like the one someone above was trying to give you wouldnt work. the AOD doesnt use a vacuum line, and the AODE id electronically controlled, and considered a better tranny than the AOD, as it has a lot of improvements over the AOD.
i would reconsider. Go to www.baumannengineering.com and see what all you can do that AODE. You can make them perform great. Get the baumannator TCS, shift kit, converter...etc...and youll be smoking 5 speeds, in comfort. Unless you really want a manual, are you sure you want to do a tranny swap on a 4 year old car? |
I just did a cost comparison and a PRO -vs- CON list, and the manual swap out totally outweighs doing up my AODE. The csot is close, within a couple hundred. But the over all difference of manual trans on Long Islands Southern State (Notorious Curves)
Plus the handling differance over all I feel more control. Believe me I was the first to say "I'll fix up the AODE" I though the cost alone would nutty, but after researching it's the only way to go. |
Sounds like you really want a manual shift, and for this reason, for you it is the only way to go.
If you feel this strongly about a manual, Im surprised you didnt find a good buy on a manual car in the beginning. Anyway, good luck.. |
I've really been looking aroung at kits and mods for the AODE and I cant see myself keeping it. I did check that site and thank you it did give me a lot to think about but I think I will go ahead and do the swap.
An old friend of mine owns a body shop (Used to be a extreme pro motor shop) in the same town I live in and he will help me whenever Im ready. He did the swap on my cousins T-Bird and it went real smooth. Cant wait to save up the pennys to get this moving. Thanks for all your help!! |
