9000 Rpm V8??!
hey guys I'm ready to build a shorter than stock stroke 302 so i can rev it higher. What do you think? can you help me? I would like to install some hugh comp pistons (13.0:1) aluminum heads (don't know which, any suggestions?) and a carburator. Why the carburator? I think the carburator will be better with a high rpm intake than any EFI intake on the market. Of course the engine will have top quality materials as Scat lightweight crank, and lightweight pistons. A DSS main support girdle and a High volume oil pump.
One last thing, I would like to rev it up to 9000 RPM's. |
Don't even attempt it on a stock block or a wet sump oiling system. From the sounds of it, I don't get the impression that you really realize what 9000 rpm is like and what it'll take to just get past 7500 rpm. Better go talk with a reputable engine builder that's built high rpm motors.
The guys in Street Bandit and Hot Street are spinning their motors to 9000-10000rpm, but you're talking solid lifter cams with mondo spring pressure (like 800# open), sheet metal intakes, R-blocks, dry sump oiling, roller cam bearings, etc. Plus, what kind of trans do you plan on running behind a 9000 rpm motor? Ain't going to be no Tremec or T5. Better plan on G-force or something similar with a tricked out long-style clutch setup. Tuning the clutch to release & hold at 9000rpm is a black art in itself. |
Oh yea , dont forget your shatterproof belhousing:D, and a bottomless bank account, It can be done, R block, solid roller, titanium parts, high compression, basicaly a nascar design.

Hhmm, I see. I knew I had to use the best parts but didn't plan on the R-block. Since I only plan on racing top speed street racing.
I've read about the R-block tendency to overheat because of it's design. I do plan on using an electric water pump with 2 fans and a good oil cooler.I planned on using a T56 (blueprinted version), since I don't plan to drop the clutch at 9000 RPM's, with a Mc Leod double disc setup. Given the facts that you gave me, a 8000 RPM engine could it be possible, or would it be the same? |
7200-7500 max would be more realistic. Start looking at the parts that you plan on running and realistically evaluate what they're capable of. For example, you can't expect to run a GT-40 intake up to 7500 and make power. I'd suggest talking with a reputable engine builder.

Hey! the old Benneton FORD F1 V8's were the highest revving V-8's in history, some 14,000 rpm's, sounds like your's will be the second.

Actually, I was really close to 9,000rpms once too.
I was ticked off one night (really ticked off) and I was on my way home in my old 88GT. I had just topped it out in 3rd and was looking to shift it into 4th, and just coast down. Instead I got it into 2nd!!!! The tires howled and the tach just flew. I was back on the clutch, but everything was fully engaged. My estimate was probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 8500rpms anyway. I certainly wouldn't want to try to get it there under it's own power though. The top of the line 302's that were used a few years back ran up to 11,000rpm on the F1 or something like that. They were allowed to compete under the displacement rule for 2V engines. The 5.0 was set into an all American chassis to form an all American entry. The other car that team used was powered by the Aurora's DOHC engine. The 302 won the only race they entered it into. |

Believe what you want, I certainly have no reason to lie about it. :rolleyes: 120mph in 2nd gear. Mind you it didn't stay in gear long. There were no ill effects from the experience.

Did the same thing once too Unit...got the 3rd to 2nd shift going down track at about 85mph. Slicks bit, clutch held its ground, motor spun to about 8600rpm. Bent every exhaust valve and pushrod in the motor. Block held up fine...wish I could say the same about myself. Sustained 8000+ use from a stock block....not gonna happen.

Sure, I'm calling Kuntz & Co. soon but I just wanted some opinions.
The car will be street driven, not a daily driver. Reliable? Could be. Streetable? C'mon fox body mustangs are hardly streetable in stock form (thanks to the great solid axle). Car wont have interiors, just 2 lightweight seats and the stock dash. No paneling. Fiberglass hood, hatch. Im thinking about steeda suspension with some lightweight K member. Im trying to get it as lightweight as possible without having to remove the bumpers or cutting the car up. Here where I live we race to top speed, we have some roads we can "safely" use at night and cops never show up. It's great. Just yesterday ( the races are held thursday) I saw a 930 blast down at like 180 MPH. Gotta love those Porsches. |

You know, you really don't need a 9000 rpm motor to hit top end. Just throw some 2.73's out back, build the motor up right, and with a decent 5-speed and all kinds of horsepower, you could hit some pretty high speeds. May take you longer to get there....

I considered that option but I would need more horsepower and torque to move those gears. If I had another 3000 more RPM's I could get away with some 3.73's. zbut given the insight that a few of the memebers have given me, I'm considering using some boost now. Don't really know, it all depends on what they tell me at Kuntz. Oh, and PR is Puerto Rico.
