T-5 question
 

When I shift from 2-3 when I am on it hard it grinds slightly. Sometimes it does it from 1st to 2nd also. Does this mean the synchros are going bad or the clutch?

It is a little rough getting it into the first 3 gears. It's not as smooth as I think it should be. 4th and 5th are fine.
What do I need, clutch or synchros or both?

The same thing is happening to my T-5. Does it pop out of gear from time to time? When I downshift from 3-2 it'll pop out sometimes, but when I go from 1-2 its fine. I'm certainly not complaining, its got 160,000 miles on it. Still a major bummer though. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/frown.gif

No, it's not popping out of gear at all.
I do know that when that happens it means the synchros are bad. That sounds like what is happening to you.
I'm just trying to figure out what I am going to need to buy.

Sounds like it could be clutch adjustment. Get an adjustable clutch cable/quadrant and see if that cures the problem. If not, then start thinking rebuild on the tranny.

Isn't the clutch cable self-adjusting? When I had the 4 speed in my '82GT, that had a self-adjusting clutch. Did Ford stop putting them in after a certain year? I am positive I used to have a self adjusting unit because it was one of those plastic units that are junk.

I was told by the guy that put my clutch in almost 2 years ago that the clutch was self adjusting... but I'm definately going to put in an adjustable quadrant when I get the chance. Good luck 82GT, hope your synch's aren't bad like mine. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/wink.gif

They're only self-adjusting up to a point. The plastic pawl only has a few teeth on it and it doesn't take the cable long to stretch past the adjustment it will provide. You can try adjusting it by pulling upward from the bottom side of the pedal with your toe then depressing the clutch. If you hear a 'click', then it moved on to the next adjustment. If not, then its probably out of adjusting teeth. I'd still recommend an adjustable cable.
