computer swap for a 94 cobra

i have been told the 94 cobra computer is crap and to get a foxbody gt computer. Do i just switch them? Do i have to do anythign else? Are there any side effects?

You have to use a special wiring harness called a PIH from PRO-M to swap the computers. The kit comes with and early model computer and all necessary plugs to make it work. It's 569.99 from brothers performance however. There are other options in chips and programmable interfaces. So it's up to you which way you wanna go.

is there any cheaper way to go about it if i like got a computer from a junkyard or something?

sn95gt19 04-25-2002 12:21 PM

i am wondering the same thing, there has to be a cheaper way to swap out the computers. cause $500+ doesnt seem worth it, if im gonna spend that much, might as well get one thats programmable by a laptop.

sn95gt19 04-25-2002 12:23 PM

does anyone have a wiring diagram, maybe you can just splice the wires and use a junkyard computer.

mak375 04-25-2002 05:07 PM

i mean i would pay the 500+ bucks if i knew it was goin to give me some serious gains, but i have heard mixed things from people...some say it really brings the cobra's alive, and others say it didnt do anything...i am just afraid it will not be compatible and stuff wont work properly when i go to drive it, and i will break something that is really expensive and hard to fix.

where do i even order a PIH?

You can get one from brothers performance. They don't have them on their website, but they have it in their catalog. I belive holcomb motorsports sells them as well. As for performance, PRO-M claims 3-4 tenths in the quarter. The biggest plus i would think is the driveability if you ever plan on a cam swap. The 94-95 computers don't deal well with fairly radical cams, while the older style computer does just fine. You can get an EEC tuner for around 400. That's what i got. Check it out at www.eec-tuner.com. I like it a lot, can adjust any function within' the computer with a lap top. You don't have to have a lap top to use one either. Just another option.

i dont have a laptop, thanks for the advise.

I just put an A9L (out of a 92 LX) which is supposed to be the fastest and best processor Ford has made into my 93 Cobra. It made a considerable difference in the driveability of the car. I don't know if you have the hesitation off of idle when you rev it, like the 93's tend to have, anyway it totally got rid of that, and runs much much much better overall. Not sure if it is 3-4 tenths better since I put longtubes on at the same time, but it was worth getting in my opinion. It made the car much nicer to drive. The only thing, which was expected, is the fuel curve is way different-I haven't had too much time to play with tuning it, but I already had to adjust the fuel pressure by 6 psi. (shows you how much different the 2 computers are). I got my computer for $75, so it was worth it to me, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it for $5xx, maybe look into a chip?? Not sure if this helps you any, but I hope it has.

I would also recommend the EEC Tuner. At $400, it will allow your EEC V ignition and computer system to deal with more aggressive camshafts, and you'll be able to tune your setup for optimal power.

The EEC tuner will give you a nice kick in the rear. The Cobra computers are terrible.

-Hold closed loop under WOT for 7 seconds
-Very weak air/fuel timing curves
-Timing pull between shifts

The reason the Cobra computer is so poorly setup is to avoid warranty claims on the T-5.

sn95gt19 04-26-2002 12:47 AM

that sounds like a really good chip/programmer, im gonna look into that, does anyone know if you can adjust injector pulse, and injetor size with this chip, also what else can you change and program with it, can you delete the timing drop between shifts on my 95, if anyone has any more info on this please let me know, thanks

mak375 04-26-2002 01:55 AM

if i did get this EEC Tuner i would just hook it up to the computer that is in there now and also to a laptop (included software installed)? it seems like if i paid a little extra the PIH would be less of a hassel...especially since i cant see myself carrying a laptop with me in my car to the track to record all kinds of info so i can tune it a little better...maybe it is just me...and i dont know but a cam is not on my list of things to get in the very near future.

Casper5.0 04-26-2002 03:10 PM

You can adjust pulsewidth, you can adjust all timing functions within' the computer as well. You can take out the tip in retard. You can also modify fuel tables, and take away the speed limiters that our cars have. One of which is at 88 mph, which will really kill you in the quarter, it backs off timing and fattens up the a/f ratio. Anything the computer controls you can alter using the tuner.

so the only choices i have to fix my crappy cobra computer is to buy a PIH or to get an EEC tunner?

sn95gt19 04-27-2002 08:25 PM

looks like thats your only choice man, but i would buy a eec tuner if i was you, check your local speed shop and if they have a dyno maybe they could load the software and tune it there for you, just a suggestion

Casper5.0 05-01-2002 11:43 AM

I forgot about the FRPP extender. It plugs into your computer and changes the timing and fuel table under WOT. It also takes away the shift retard. It also allows you to vary the A/F ratio and the rev limiter within' the computer. It costs about $300. Ford stopped producing them though so they're becoming hard to come by. I don't really have any idea where to find one. Mustangs Unlimited used to have them. At least it was listed in their catalog. Don't really know if they still carry them or not. www. mustangsunlimited.com is their web site.

ok so what kind of computer do i need to hook up to this PIH so that my computer problems are over? my 94 cobra? a 92gt? what will work?

Unit 5302 05-05-2002 01:24 PM

You use it on your existing computer.

From what I understand the PRO-M PIH kit comes with an A9L. The price on their site says its $601. I dont think its worth that. You can get a good custom burned Autologic (or Diablo or Superchips if you wish) chip for about half of that. It will be PNP and will give you better performance than the PIH kit.

Contact www.cerraracing.com They are a dealer for all these companies.

I went to the track last weekend and played with my tuner and was amazed at the results. I gained almost 2 mph in the quarter by just leaning out the a/f ratio. I went in running 101.2 (bad conditions) and left running 103.0. I had already taken all the timing retard stuff out, so that could've possibly given me a mph before even going to track. So what i'm saying is a computer change of some sort is very useful in the cobras. 2 mph is probably 25 hp i'd say at the fly wheel, so that's a pretty killer increase with just a plug in mod.
