Valve Covers
 

I'm getting my car worked on, (new clutch assembly, hd clutch fork, billet clutch cable, new flywheel) and One of the things that's being done is getting my rear main seal replaced. They also found out that my Valve Covers are leaking some oil. Gosh, I shouldn't known that before when i noticed some oil on the side of the block. Dumb me. Anyways, they want $250 to change the gaskets, so I figured i'm going to do it myself. For you guys that have done this before, is it really that hard to remove a valve cover and replace the gaskets? I just want to get some kinda idea of how long it might take for me to do. Oh yeah, kinda going along the same line, if I have those off anyways, I'm gonna take a look at my stock rockers, and possibly put some new ones in. Is that really difficult other then finding out how tight to bolt them?

Replacing the valve cover gaskets is simple, I just replaced mine last weekend. Just take the valve covers off, take off the old gasket, (scrape any old RTV or any old gasket off if there's any on the valve covers) put some RTV on it and bolt it back up. I think you are supposed to torque the bolts to 7/12 to 10 lbs. The rear main seal is going to require you to actually drop the tranny. I would assume if Ford is replacing the clutch, they will replace the rear main seal at the same time. I hope this is what you were looking for. -Keith

It really helps to remove the upper intake to do the valve covers. Otherwise, you can't clear the valvetrain on the drivers side. Pick up a service manual for your car (ford service manual) and read about it. It will tell you everything about this and more. This is a really easy task with a little practice. I used the rubber valve cover gaskets with steel inner frame so that you can re-use them over and over. Good luck.

Yeah I was looking at my shop manual and then looking at the car. Honestly it doesn't look like I hafto pull anything else to get the valve covers off. Was thinking of going with the rubber/cork gaskets.

Yeah, for Is replacing the rear main seal too. LOL, it was leaking anyways.

Personally I would get the rubber valvecover gaskets.
