Best money I have spent!!!

My 4.10's went in on Wednesday. Oh my ******* GOD!!! The first time I got on it, I shifted out of first at 6100 rpm!! I swear as soon as I step on the gas, I have to shift. I love them. It was the best improvement that I have made. A HUGE difference over the 2.73's. If anyone is thinking about getting gears, DO IT. All I have to do now is play with my tire pressure to get these DR's to hook up good.

Ieatcamaros 04-26-2002 09:11 PM

3.55 or 3.73

Which is better with a T-5? My 89 GT has the tall 2.73s in it. I was seriously thinking about one or the other. Since I am married, funds don't look to good right now. I have heard that 3.73 could be too much gear. I am a backyard mechanic (hobby) and a machinist for a living. What is required to do the swap? Thanks.

OUTPLAYN 04-26-2002 09:12 PM

Have ya gone to the track yet? Any difference in ET's?

fiveohpatrol 04-26-2002 11:56 PM

Its a great feelin aint it :D

Ieatcamaros dont waste your time with 3.55's. alot of people will tell you that if you do alot of highway driving then 3.73's are too much, but thats what I have and I do ALOT of highway driving while cruising at 80 or higher, and the RPM's are fine (around 2700 or so)

I've actually been thinking of getting 4.10's, but i dont think the improvement over 3.73's would be worth the money just yet.

I'm finally getting new gears put in monday, I can't wait! I can't even imagine what 3.73's will feel like compaired to the stock 2.73's? Can anyone describe how its going to feel???

DemonGT 04-27-2002 01:20 AM

iv heard 3.55's are better if you have or plan on a blower...just my .2$

OUCH! So much for gas mileage. Then again most of us could care less about that.
I would get 3.55 gears with the T-5. That is the combo that I have and it offers plenty of go for me. 1st gear flys by and it still pulls well on the freeway. My car is at about 2100 rpm at 80-85 mph.

sn95gt19 04-27-2002 02:51 AM

i had 4.10's in my 89lx (which i have since sold for a newer 95gt) i also had a tremec 3550 trans. whatever you do do not get 4.10's if you have a tremec. with the different first gear in the trans, you could pop the clutch at idle and the car would launch perfect, first gear was pointless, when i would race i would start out in second gear. i would go with 3.55's with the tremec, one plus side to the trans was the over drive gear being different, dropped about 750-1000 rpm on the highway.

homeroV8 04-27-2002 06:48 AM

Iīm using 3:73 for a week now, and havenīt stop smiling since. It may hurts mileage some, but not that severe. An o/r h-pipe is on the way.
Thanks for all the people on this site who have helped me on deciding.

Ieatcamaros, The gear swapping is better left to a speed shop who has all the special tools. I've heard that it requires very precise measurements.

89 ATI 04-27-2002 03:55 PM

IEATCOMAROS If you have a dial indicator you can do the job yourself. There is nothing mystical about it. Just do a search on this board and find some information on how to do it and you should be able to do the swap. I have done probably 7 or 8 swaps in my driveway. I don't drag race just drive it on the streets when the weathers nice and I like the 3.55's better than the 3.73's. With the 3.73 half the time I took off in second gear because I was shifting before I got half way through an intersection. If you do much racing get the 3.73's.

Ieatcamaros 04-27-2002 05:44 PM

Thanks for all the help. I do have a dial indicator, all kinds of them. I can not seem to find what I am looking for to install them. I am new to this site and just have not gotten that familiar with it yet.

Thanks a bunch!! That link told me exactly what I needed to know. Now when the time is right, I'll most likely get those 3.55s I want and install them, of course. Which set of gears are the best ones to buy? I have heard to buy ford racing and nothing else.

I just put in my first set of gears last year. You might do like I did. I took everything apart, had a guy who's done it before take it to the shop and press the pinion bearing out and press it on the new one, then he made sure the wear pattern on the gears were OK after install, then I put everything back together. He was only there about an hour. I used the Ford 3.73 gears, it came with shims/new crusher sleeve; however, I didn't need any shims. In my case and I've heard from others, that basically if you replace your gears from the factory with Ford gears, it shouldn't be much more than take the old ones out, put the new ones in and check the wear pattern. You'll need an impact wrench to crush the new sleeve, otherwise, just use the old one and flatten it out with a hammer on four spots like I did. Don't forget some good gear oil and speedo gear for transmission.

I remember my first day after i got my 4:10's put in. it was only about 10 min after i picked up the car and was heading home and this girl and her dad were next to me at a stop light she smiled at me and so did her dad. she put it in netural and reved the motor i just smiled back then the light went green and she blew my doors off:eek: I was not used to the gears yet and i popped the clutch out at around 3 grand and was just siting back there spinning the shet out of my tires threw 2nd gear but i was like(holy shet) this rocks:D . now i am used to them and can prevent the wheel spin way better. I love these gears. we got on the high way and i decided to blast past them at about 110mph;)

DemonGT 04-29-2002 10:48 PM

whats the average cost for a gear install

82 GT 04-30-2002 02:23 PM

I was quoted between $400-$500 if you don't have the gears already. Prices vary from place to place.
