4.10's on 2001 GT?

I am thinking of installing 4.10 gears on my 2001 gt to pick up the pace a bite. I would like to know if anyone has already done this and if you have would you recommend I do it. And if you don't what gearing do you recommend? Its a 5 speed of course. I don't want to go to low but I also don't want to go to high. I do a lot of freeway driving but I wouldn't mind spending more money on gas if I can take out a couple more camero SS's and WS6 trans ams.

Thanks for your advice.

go 373

go with 373s, better all around gear for s speed,i was at the local 8th mile yester day and ran against a 2000 gt manual with 410s centerforce dual friction exaust and some other mods and we ran side by side and he has 35 more stock horses, maybe my car is a freak but i think he had to much gear

steedamustang01 04-30-2002 05:39 PM

GO 4.10'S. THE 99-02 4.6 MOTOR IS DIFFERENT THAN THE 4.6 IN THE 96-98. SO ANYONE WITH THE 96-98 IS GOING TO TELL YOU TO GO W/ 3.73. THE 4.10'S ARE MADE FOR OUR CARS. I DROVE MY BUDDYS BULLITT LAST NIGHT AND HE JUST PUT IN 3.73'S AND THEN I DROVE MY BUDDYS 00 GT W/ 4.10'S ... .WOW BIG DIFFERENCE. GO 4.10'S!!!!

slow98 04-30-2002 05:55 PM

ive drivin both cars with both gears, 373 is a better gear for both motors, the power curve does not differ that much between the two even though the 99+ has more power, plus with the freeway drivin the 373 will be better

LET ME MAKE THIS EASY HERE'S WHAT A FEW OTHER PEOPLE WITH 99 - 02 MUSTANG GT'S SAID

Tim C (1999 GT) SAID:

"If you were going to supercharge or turbo your car I'd say get 3.73's but for NA cars 4.10's are great. I put 4.10s in my 99 GT, and I love them. At 55 MPH I Tach 2000, at 82 MPH I tach 3000, in 5th gear. I do maybe 50-75 Miles of highway driving a month, so there is no problem. The car is alot more fun to drive in traffic now"

Mustang92 (2000 GT) SAID:

"I wasn't going to say anything because I end up having to explain 100 times that my car is a street car not a drag only car but here goes. By the way I didn't rack up 73K miles in 2.5 years on my car by driving to the track only.

Anyone notice that the poeple on here recommending gears are all 96-98 GT or Cobra owners except for one? No offense you guys but you don't know what a 99-02 GT needs in the way of gearing, the car makes power differently than yours. The power band on a 96-98 GT falls off well before a PI headed car and that makes a big difference in gearing. In fact you basically fall in the same category as the 5.0 cars that make peak power at a lower RPM.

The most effiecient gear for a 99-02 NA GT is a 4.10, it gives you room to grow with bolt-ons and puts you through the traps right at your peak power without any negative effects. On the freeway at 80MPH you'll be right around 2900-2950 RPMs. If you think that's too high my dads stock explorer sits at 2900 RPMs at 80MPH. Top speed shouldn't be a concern either since with a 4.10s you'll acutally be able to use 5th gear and can still go over 160MPH if your motor makes enough power to push it that fast. MPG shouldn't be an issue either, with 4.10s I averaged 19-20MPG during my daily commute and as much as 27 MPG on long distance trips. With 4.30's I still get 19MPG and about 24-25MPG on long trips not bad for cruising at 80MPH (3100 RPM).

For arguements sake a 3.73 gear in our cars puts you through the traps below your power band in 4th gear slowing you down so without slicks you basically end up with no gain in ET only a little better 60 foot. The only reason in my book to go 3.73 in a 99-02 car is if you have future plans for a power adder. Even then there are ways around it like my car that will see a power adder in the next year or so, I'll keep my 4.30s and go to a 28" tall tire."

013bcobra (2001 Cobra) SAID:

"Enough Said! Couldn't have said it better myself! :D " (talking about what Mustang92 said)

gip99gt (1999 GT) SAID:

"Go with 4.10's let that be your first mod. Save up if you have to, but get gears first"

gip99gt (1999 GT) SAID:
"I recently had some 4.10's installed and I love them. I haven't went to the track yet but when I speed shift I stay in the right power band for racing. I do agree If I was going to get a super charger I would have gone with 3.73's but for N/A 4.10's rule..."

I HOPE THIS HELPS, I DID A POLL NOT TO LONG AGO AND IT WAS FUNNY, EVEYONE WITH 96-98 SAID 3.73 BUT EVERYONE AND I MEAN EVERYONE WITH 99-02 SAID YOU HAVE TO GO WITH 4.10'S. WHO WOULD KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR MOTOR, SOMEONE WHO HAS THE SAME THING? OR SOMEONE WHO HAS A DIFFERENT MOTOR? .... THINK ABOUT IT. L8R

StoplightWarrior 04-30-2002 07:46 PM

I see, wickedgt, that perhaps you fear the gear? Do not be afraid. 4.10's are your friend. I love mine. Can't imagine going back to 3.27's!!!

"DONT FEAR THE GEAR"

slow98 04-30-2002 08:13 PM

you right im wrong, power curves do suggest 410s would be better... i still ran right beside a 2000 thousand gt with 410s and basically the same mods as me - the maf and + his clutch, in the 8th,time slips were less than a 10th apart in most cases, but i admit based on power curve u are right and i am wrong

1987-1992 gt 225hp @4200 rpm
300lbs ft @3200 rpm

1996-1997 gt 215hp @4400 rpm
285lbs ft @3500 rpm

1998 gt 225hp @4750 rpm
390lbs ft @3500 rpm

1999-curr. gt 260hp @5250 rpm
302lbs ft @4000 rpm

not a huge difference in power curve but peak torque at 4000 rpm does suggest 410...sorry i got confused guys...peace

GO FOR 410s

slow98 04-30-2002 08:17 PM

oops

290 lbs ft of torque on the 98...typo....my bad

I was going to post, but steedamustang01 took the words from my mouth (literally, when he quoted me!), If you plan on N/A, or nitrous go 4.10 (you could hit the spray after your rolling to keep spinning down). But if future plans call for boost, go 3.73. I have convinced everyone I hang with who has 99+ GT That 4.10s are awesome, and 3 of them just installed a set. In the quarter I cross right at 5500-5700 Rpms. In the city I actually picked up a couple of MPG (now i cruise in 5th instead of 4th, my rpms now are lower in 5th than I used to cruise in 4th), and only dropped about 3-4mpg highway on the few 100+ mile trips i have taken.

I highly suggest the next step after the gears be control arms in the rear and if you dont mind some sway and a slight loss in cornering, lakewood 70/30 front struts and a removed front sway bar (It lifts the front real good and cut down on the amount I spin off the line, ask Merc, Mike_Navigator, Budman 94GT, or MstngScoob), they'll tell ya!) Plus with the right mods, 4.10s and suspension, you can surprise the hell out of new vettes on bottom end like I did in the post Merc made in street racers forum (Weekend Kills ..... and Tim C vs new vette!):)

Good luck
Tim

Ditto!

slow98, unless you running mid 13's then I doubt you were going against a driver that knew how to drive his car very well. Stock 99+ GTs will run 14.0 were as best I've seen in a bone stock 96-98 is 14.4 with a good driver. With 4.10s, O/R H, K&N I was in the 13.4's.

Just wondering? If you have a nearly stock 2001 GT 5 speed, and lets just say your running the 1/4 in 14 flat. How much would 4.10's take off your time? Compared to the 3.27's?

gip99gt 05-01-2002 10:45 AM

Get the 4.10's I drive at least 44 miles each way to work, but I also enjoy going to the track. I just take my time going to work keeping my car around 65-70mph. Thats if you travel a lot on the highway. At the track this weekend it felt like a whole different car, I got a pair of Nitto D/R's on factory stock rims from a guy and they hooked up great. It all depends on what you want but don't fear the gear. Best mod I have done so far.....

Tim C 05-01-2002 07:18 PM

Depending on how hard you drive it you should run between .3 and .5 quicker. I only dropped about .3, but I Granny the car at the track, compared to the street (Im scared of breaking something infront of a whole crowd of people:) ).

Mstngscoob 05-04-2002 10:18 PM

yup i am one of the many tim c has persuaded to get 4.10s i love them and have not lost any mpg's they are all that they say they are:D

ForPointSex 05-08-2002 09:10 AM

I drive around 40K miles a year so I got 3.73's. My tires screetch through 1st now. If i got 4.10's I would have to get wider set of back tires. I like the 3.73's because on highway the RPM's only go up by 300. I drive my car on the highway most of the time, If i wanted a high rpm car, I would of gotten a civic. I don't go to the track either. My mustang is my daily commuter, not a project car.

I'm right there with you I just hit 80K in my car after 2.5 years. With 4.30's my car sits at 3K RPM at 80 MPH and most of my driving is highway. My car is a daily commuter as well and not a project car in fact if you ask anyone on here there aren't many that are project cars.
