Ignition Problem, hopefully simple
hey all, been a while. that time of year again. well, this is a problem that has gotten worse until now i cant even keep it running. at first, i would have to push the key slightly forward when the car was running to get the power windows or wipers to work. then the car started dying when taking corners, up to the point that i would have to find the exact right key position or the car would die on start up. have to wiggle the key till you find the groove or something. so is this a ignition switch, ignition itself, or steering column problem. figured someone dealt with this before.
thanx, let me know if i lost ya, trying to be quick. Q |
yeah...
Sounds like the ignition switch. I had a similar problem with the car dying while driving it. If you moved the key a smidgeon a certain way it would come right back to life. Also might involve the lock cylinder but not likely. Switch out the ignition switch and if that doesn't fix it, I'd check into a new lock cylinder. Both easy and cheap jobs.

I had this problem on my old '84. It was not the cylinder lock. It was the ignition switch in the steering column. The plastic on the ignition had come a little lose and would slip out of the column socket maybe an 8th of an inch. Enough to lose the contact and kill the engine. Take the covers off your column and give it a look.
