another gear question
 
I have a 1990 GT and i dont plan to put a supercharge or a stroker engine its going to stay pretty much stock (to many tickets already) the question is 3:73 or 3:55 lots of people say 3:73 but i just one another opinion

I would say 3.73's all the way, maybe even 4.10's if youre going to leave it mostly stock other than that and you dont care much about mileage.... I cant see 3.55's making that big of a difference.

Its ALL goin to depend on how much you drive the stang. Is it your daily driver? If so 3:55's will make a difference and less costly on gas. They made a great difference in my 90 stang. 3:73's If you drive it just cruising and a occasional race. But if you want this to just be your little warrior go with the 4:10's.

Yes, Goin to a bigger gear will cause less gas milage. Because it will be running at a higher RPM. So say with your stock gears now in OD going approx 65 you will be at 1500RPM. Now with new gears going 65 in OD may cause u to be at 3000RPM

I drive 45 miles each way to work, the stock 2.73's give me great gas mileage, but obviously slow me down. I have been wondering between 3.55's and 3.23's Even 3.08's would be nicer, but not worth the cost to swap over.

I'm gonna drive my buddys 89 with 3.55's to get a feel for the swap, my 74 has 3.42's but also has 28" tall 275/60-15's out back.

I was really pleased with my 3:08's but my best friend just got a 2001 GT and We havent race yet but that they will come and I dont want to see no 2001 Xmas tree in front of me if u know what i mean

Since you are planning on keeping your motor pretty much stock, go with a minimum of a 3.73! Go with at least 3.73 Especially if you if have an AOD and seriously consider 4.10's.

If you have a manual and are going to keep it relatively stock go with 3.73.

My car with the AOD and 3.73's gets 25.5 MPG on the highway at 75 MPH and about 27 MPG on the highway at about 60 MPH.

Since the 5-speed has a 5th gear(overdrive) ratio of 0.68 and the AOD's overdrive ratio is 0.67 I would expect you to get very similar MPG at constant highway speeds. Around town it would be a little different, but it shouldn't hurt you that bad.

Bottom line, it's WORTH IT to get 3.73's!

thank u very much guys for all ur replies tomorrow i'm getting (finally) what do u guys think 3:73 u got that right they are charging me $395 with the speedo gear some people say that the speedo for the 3:73 is not 100% accurate like the 3:55 is. Is that true?

Im getting mine done next week or the week after for $420. I shopped around and they wanted $700++ at The Mustang Ranch and $1,300 at Speed Merchant!! All the ricers go there and some domestics. They really ram you on the prices there, atleast in labor. For them to put in a tach they say at the very least $200 in labor.
