Bummer man-any ideas?
The other day, I came back from sac to fairfield. Usally it's a 45min drive or more. I made it in 20 min. I was going about 120mph with two other cars, a minivan, and a little pickup. Well, the car doesn't like to go that fast for very long and so it started to heat up. But never overheated. Anywho, here's the real thing, now the car is smoking blue/gray smoke. What do u think I burned up? The smoke isn't bad, but seems like it's getting worse. I was hoping it was the valves, so i put in extra lead additive, no luck.
Is there anything short of rebuilding the motor that I can do? |
Perform two compression tests. Do it dry the first time, and wet the second time, and post the results.
Take care, -Chris |
uh oh, how many miles on your engine?
|
No smoking allowed
In my experience, the 'best' way to find a weak spot in your (older) engine (rings, valve guides, etc) is to do an extended 120 mph run.
I know, I've done it. Usually it's ring failure but do the compression test so you'll have a better idea of what's up. Start thinking 'rebuild', just in case. That way, if it turns out to be a minor problem, you'll be thrilled and if it isn't, you'll be prepared, not shocked. |
I planned on doing that. I'll post both dry, and wet.
I planned on rebuilding it later on, not sonner, oh well. Only 3000 miles on the heads pistons and lower end, I didn't do it, and I guess it was a half *** job. |
Hmmm...COuld of been many of things, but probably a burned up head gasket or a cracked head.
Do ya get any signs of compression leaking into the cooling system (Take your radiator cap off and see if bubbles come up when your cranking). Or any in the oiling system? I did I super high speed prolonged run in my old Stang once (The 64 1/2 with the 289) and managed to successfully burn up three Valves seats and kill an equal amount of Exhaust valves. It was awesome (Not really). |
